Uzbekistan Unveils First C-390 in Central Asian Airlift Power Shift
Uzbekistan becomes Central Asia’s first C-390 Millennium customer, introducing jet-powered tactical airlift while diversifying a military aviation fleet historically shaped by Soviet-origin aircraft.
(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Embraer unveiled the first C-390 Millennium built for the Uzbekistan Air Force, marking a decisive modernization milestone for Central Asia’s largest military and its aging transport aviation architecture.
Displayed inside a hangar with grey camouflage, Uzbek insignia, national flag, “UZ AIR FORCE” markings and tail number UK 39010, the aircraft provides the first visible confirmation of Tashkent’s new jet-powered airlift capability.
Uzbekistan consequently becomes Central Asia’s first C-390 customer and prospective operator, extending Embraer’s military transport footprint into a strategically contested region where Russian equipment historically shaped force structure, maintenance systems and operational doctrine.
“Today, Embraer presents the first C-390 Millennium aircraft of the Uzbekistan Air Force,” Embraer declared, explicitly identifying the republic as the platform’s first Central Asian customer after prolonged commercial confidentiality.
The aircraft emerges from a two-unit agreement signed on December 27, 2024, when Embraer described the purchaser as an undisclosed customer and bundled training, support, spare parts and mission-specific configuration within the package.

Tashkent’s identity remained confidential until the Singapore Airshow on February 3, 2026, although Brazilian export-credit documentation covering two Embraer aircraft destined for Uzbekistan had already created a strong, publicly traceable procurement trail.
The contract added approximately US$240 million to Embraer’s backlog, a figure widely associated with the purchase, although neither manufacturer nor customer has confirmed the final price, unit breakdown or financing terms publicly.
That uncertainty matters because acquisition cost alone cannot reveal Uzbekistan’s long-term logistics burden, training pipeline, spare-parts depth, infrastructure investment or whether availability guarantees will support sustained tactical airlift operations across dispersed bases.
Configured primarily for troop and vehicle transport, humanitarian assistance, disaster management and medical evacuation, the C-390 addresses both military mobility and national resilience requirements across Uzbekistan’s extensive deserts, mountains and earthquake-prone territory.
Its arrival potentially changes the operational tempo of Uzbek air mobility by combining jet speed, a 26-tonne maximum concentrated payload and austere-runway performance between lighter Airbus C-295Ws and heavier Ilyushin Il-76 transports.
However, two aircraft cannot transform national airlift capacity numerically, making readiness, crew generation, maintenance discipline and mission allocation more strategically important than fleet size during simultaneous military, humanitarian or disaster-response demands.
The deeper geopolitical signal is supplier diversification: Uzbekistan is integrating Brazilian airlift, European helicopters, Chinese combat aircraft and remaining Soviet-origin platforms, reducing dependence upon any single defence-industrial ecosystem without formally abandoning established relationships.

A Two-Aircraft Deal Built Around Readiness, Training and Support
Brazil’s Export Financing and Guarantee Committee approved export-credit insurance on April 25, 2024, for two aircraft destined for Uzbekistan, with financing connected to BNDES, Brazil’s national development bank, preceding the manufacturer’s contract announcement.
This financing mechanism lowers exporter risk and improves buyer affordability, demonstrating how sovereign credit support can become a strategic instrument for penetrating defence markets traditionally dominated by Russian, European or American aerospace suppliers.
Embraer formally announced the two-aircraft contract in December 2024 but withheld the customer’s identity, a common defence-export practice that preserves political discretion while financing, configuration, training and delivery arrangements mature behind closed doors.
The manufacturer identified Uzbekistan in February 2026, while September’s presentation of UK 39010 shifted the programme from contractual promise toward physical delivery, crew conversion and an operational capability requiring sustained institutional preparation.
Bosco da Costa Jr., President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, said the aircraft was “redefining the concepts of military transport aviation” through advanced technology, reliability, low operating costs and performance.
That assessment remains a manufacturer claim rather than independent evidence for Uzbekistan, because cost, dispatch reliability and mission completion will depend upon local maintenance proficiency, spares availability, flying hours and operating conditions.
The contract’s training and support provisions carry strategic weight beyond the airframes, since a two-aircraft fleet has limited redundancy and could lose operational relevance if one jet undergoes prolonged maintenance.
No detailed timetable covers the second aircraft, leaving uncertainty over how quickly Uzbekistan can establish paired-aircraft availability, rotate crews, absorb maintenance demands and preserve capacity when one platform becomes unavailable.
Public information also does not establish whether either aircraft carries the KC-390 aerial-refuelling kit, preventing firm conclusions about any future tanker role, receiver training requirement or expansion of Uzbekistan’s combat-aircraft operating radius.
The safest assessment is consequently narrow but significant: UK 39010 introduces a modern medium-airlift system whose strategic value will be determined by support depth, operational doctrine and availability rather than promotional specifications alone.

Jet Speed and Austere Access Transform the Logistics Footprint
Powered by two IAE V2500-E5 turbofans producing 139.4 kilonewtons each, the C-390 cruises near 470 knots, allowing Uzbekistan to compress response timelines across long internal distances compared with slower turboprop transport aircraft.
The aircraft carries 26,000 kilograms as a concentrated payload or 23,000 kilograms distributed, positioning it between the C-295W’s tactical capacity and the Il-76’s heavier strategic-lift role within Uzbekistan’s fleet.
Approximate range reaches 2,000 kilometres carrying 26 tonnes, 2,720 kilometres carrying 23 tonnes and 5,020 kilometres carrying 14 tonnes, creating mission-planning options based upon payload, runway access and urgency.
A ferry range around 6,240 kilometres, potentially extending to 8,460 kilometres with auxiliary tanks, gives Tashkent deployment flexibility, although practical reach depends upon reserves, routing, weather, payload and diplomatic overflight permissions.
Its 18.5-metre cargo hold, approximately 3.4 metres wide and three metres high, accommodates seven NATO 463L pallets, multiple vehicles or a Black Hawk-sized helicopter through the rear loading ramp.
Personnel configurations include as many as 80 troops or 66 paratroopers, while medical layouts can carry up to 74 stretchers and eight attendants, translating cargo volume into scalable military or humanitarian response options.
An integrated cargo-handling system and computed airdrop release points support high- or low-altitude delivery, giving commanders alternatives when surface access is disrupted, runways are unavailable or isolated units require time-sensitive resupply.
Short, semi-prepared and unpaved runway capability is strategically relevant across mountainous and desert areas, because access to austere airfields can reduce vulnerable road movements and distribute the logistics footprint beyond major permanent bases.
Yet published take-off distances of 1,100 to 1,630 metres vary with weight and conditions, meaning runway strength, elevation, temperature, obstacles and support equipment will govern usable performance beyond headline figures.
For Uzbekistan, the operational breakthrough is therefore not simply speed or payload, but the ability to connect dispersed nodes rapidly while balancing infrastructure limits, maintenance support, airfield security and mission-specific risk.
Multi-Mission Architecture Expands Military and Civil Response
Roll-on, roll-off mission kits permit reconfiguration within approximately three hours for airlift, medical evacuation, search and rescue, firefighting, aerial delivery or special operations, enabling a small fleet to cover multiple contingencies.
This modularity can increase utilisation efficiency, but competing tasking creates opportunity costs because the same aircraft assigned to disaster relief, medical evacuation or firefighting becomes unavailable for troop movement and military logistics.
Humanitarian assistance and disaster relief are central to the declared Uzbek mission set, reflecting exposure to earthquakes, floods and extreme weather where jet speed can move rescue teams, shelters, medicine and generators quickly.
Medical evacuation configurations provide a national resilience tool capable of moving dozens of casualties, while containerised intensive-care concepts available to other operators illustrate potential growth beyond basic stretcher transport if Uzbekistan invests further.
The Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System II can carry 3,000 US gallons of water or retardant, although no public information confirms Uzbekistan purchased this capability or associated training and ground support.
Likewise, hose-and-drogue pods can convert appropriately equipped aircraft into KC-390 tankers delivering approximately 400 US gallons per minute, but Uzbekistan’s configuration remains undisclosed and tanker assumptions would therefore be premature.
An available 360-degree self-protection suite could strengthen survivability in higher-threat environments, although neither the installed defensive aids nor their warning, countermeasure and integration standards have been publicly detailed for UK 39010.
Modern fly-by-wire controls, a glass cockpit and integrated aerial-delivery systems reduce workload for the three-person crew, but transitioning from Soviet-era practices will require doctrine, simulator time, English-language technical proficiency and recurrent training.
The V2500 engine’s extensive commercial lineage may broaden global maintenance access and parts familiarity, potentially lowering support risk, although military configuration, export controls and Uzbekistan’s contracted supply arrangements still shape fleet availability.
Consequently, multi-mission flexibility strengthens Uzbekistan only if planners protect training hours, pre-position mission kits, certify ground teams and establish priority rules preventing humanitarian and military demands from simultaneously exhausting two aircraft.
Modernising an Aging Soviet-Era Airlift Fleet
Uzbekistan’s current transport inventory reportedly includes three Il-76s, two An-12s, four An-26s, four C-295Ws and occasionally one Tu-134, while An-24s also appear in assessments of aircraft requiring replacement or augmentation.
Exact serviceability remains uncertain, particularly among Soviet-era airframes affected by age, shrinking parts availability and maintenance complexity, so nominal fleet totals may substantially overstate aircraft available for immediate, sustained operations.
The Il-76 provides heavy, long-range lift, whereas the C-295W covers lighter regional missions; the C-390 fills the middle tier by combining greater payload than light transports with higher efficiency than four-engine strategic aircraft.
This layered structure lets commanders reserve scarce Il-76 capacity for outsized loads while assigning the C-390 to priority missions requiring speed, readiness or austere access beyond the practical payload envelope of C-295Ws.
Most evidence indicates supplementation rather than immediate replacement, meaning Antonovs and Il-76s may retain secondary roles as C-390 crews build experience and commanders test reliability across Uzbekistan’s demanding geography and seasonal extremes.
A mixed fleet nevertheless creates parallel training, tooling, documentation, inventory and supplier requirements, potentially increasing logistics complexity even as diversification reduces vulnerability to sanctions, political pressure or disruption from one provider.
Uzbekistan must therefore balance the C-390’s advertised lower life-cycle costs against the diseconomies of operating only two examples, where fixed training and infrastructure expenses are distributed across an exceptionally small national fleet.
Early operators have reported approximately 93 percent mission capability and mission-completion rates exceeding 99 percent, but these figures cannot be assumed for Uzbekistan before sufficient local operating data becomes available.
Readiness will ultimately depend upon spare-engine access, component repair pathways, technical personnel retention, depot arrangements and Embraer’s response times, particularly because a single grounded aircraft immediately removes half the C-390 fleet.
If sustained properly, the two jets will deliver qualitative modernization through speed, interoperability and mission flexibility; if support depth proves inadequate, limited quantity could constrain their strategic effect to priority sorties.

Central Asia Becomes a New Front in the Global Airlifter Competition
The Uzbek purchase advances a broader multi-vector procurement strategy that combines Western Airbus H125 and H215 helicopters, Chinese J-10CE fighters, remaining Russian-origin aircraft and Brazilian C-390 transports within one increasingly diversified force.
At least six J-10CE fighters appeared publicly in August 2026, signalling combat-aircraft diversification as the C-390 alters air mobility, although integrating Chinese, Brazilian and Soviet ecosystems creates interoperability and sustainment challenges.
For Moscow, the transaction does not prove political realignment, but it demonstrates that Central Asian customers can source critical military aviation capabilities beyond Russia when financing, availability, performance or lifecycle considerations favour alternatives.
For Brazil, Uzbekistan provides a strategically visible entry into Central Asia, validating state-backed export financing and potentially creating a regional reference customer capable of influencing neighbouring air-force assessments of medium jet transport requirements.
Embraer’s programme began in 2007, flew in 2015 and entered service in 2019, evolving from a national C-130 replacement into an export platform selected across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia.
The C-390 competes principally against the C-130J and, toward the upper medium-airlift segment, the A400M, using jet speed, payload, modularity and austere-field performance to challenge established procurement assumptions during global fleet recapitalisation.
Uzbekistan’s two-aircraft order is modest beside larger commitments, yet geographic significance outweighs volume because every new operating region expands maintenance experience, supplier confidence, training networks and evidence supporting subsequent export campaigns.
Production capacity remains a constraint: Embraer’s Gavião Peixoto line theoretically supports 18 aircraft annually, but actual output has remained lower while workforce, suppliers and delivery schedules expand against a growing international backlog.
UK 39010 represents an Uzbek capability milestone and Embraer execution test, because delayed deliveries or weak support could undermine confidence while reliable operations could accelerate interest among Asian operators replacing Soviet transports.
Strategically, the first Uzbek C-390 changes the battlespace through faster distributed logistics, not offensive firepower, while signalling that Central Asia’s defence architecture is becoming more technologically plural, commercially competitive and geopolitically autonomous.
