(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has announced that MiG-31 fighter jets will be equipped with hypersonic guided missiles called “Kinzhal” during patrols in the Black Sea.
These hypersonic guided missiles have a speed of Mach 9 and an operational range of up to 1,000 kilometers.
They can be equipped with both nuclear and conventional warheads.
Putin emphasized that this action is not a threat but rather a response to the situation in the Black Sea.
According to his directive, the Russian Air Force will begin patrols in a neutral zone within the Black Sea airspace, with MiG-31 aircraft armed with hypersonic Kinzhal missiles.
He noted that they will carry out visual and weapon control, similar to what is happening in the Mediterranean Sea.
This decision was made after a meeting between President Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in Beijing. Putin expressed concern about the escalating situation in the Middle East.
The “Kinzhal” hypersonic guided missile is designed to be difficult to detect by radar and is highly agile, intended for striking targets at sea and on land.
President Putin underlined that this decision comes as the United States deployed two aircraft carriers, the USS Gerald R. Ford and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, to the eastern Mediterranean amid the escalating conflict between Israel and groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Along with the two aircraft carriers, more than 200 combat aircraft were deployed, accompanied by several other warships.
Furthermore, the United States also deployed fighter aircraft to the Middle East as an effort to prevent the conflict from spreading to involve other parties, especially Iran.
In an effort to assist Israel, the United Kingdom will send reconnaissance aircraft and two support ships, RFA Lyme Bay and RFA Argus, along with 100 Royal Marines, to the region.
his British military asset deployment aims to prevent the conflict between Hamas and Tel Aviv from spreading.
According to President Putin, he and Xi Jinping also discussed current issues in the Middle East and agreed that both countries face similar threats that require further strengthening of their cooperation and relations.
