Kazakhstan Put For Sale 117 Soviet-Era Fighter Jets, Including MiG-31
The former Soviet-era fighter aircraft along with their engines being offered for sale by the Central Asian nation include MiG-31, MiG-27, MiG-29, and Su-24, which were built during the tensions of the Cold War era in the 1970s and 1980s.
(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Former Soviet Union member state, Kazakhstan, has put more than 100 fighter jets and bombers built during the Soviet era up for sale to interested parties.
The former Soviet-era fighter aircraft, along with their engines, being offered for sale by the Central Asian nation include MiG-31, MiG-27, MiG-29, and Su-24, which were built during the Cold War tensions of the 1970s and 1980s.
According to reports from local media in Kazakhstan, the announcement regarding the sale of 117 of the country’s aging assets has been made.
Among the fighter aircraft listed for immediate sale are 10 MiG-31 aircraft priced for $1 million for all 10 units.
The fighter jets and bombers being offered for sale by the country are slated for retirement, as reported by local media.
All 117 aircraft were operated by various formations of the Kazakhstan Air Force in Almaty, Abai, Karaganda, and Shymkent.
These fighter jets and bombers are no longer operational due to their advanced age, and attempts to refurbish them are deemed uneconomical.
The sale of Kazakhstan’s combat aircraft is being conducted by the government agency known as “Kazspecexport.”
Kazakhstan was a former member of the Soviet Union and inherited many assets from the union, including fighter jets and bombers, when the communist bloc dissolved in the 1990s.
Kazakhstan later gained its independence but maintained close military and security ties with Russia.
The Central Asian nation is also a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).
The CSTO, established in 2002, is a military alliance comprising six former Soviet Union member states: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
To replace the aging fighter aircraft from the former Soviet Union, Kazakhstan has acquired more modern aircraft from Russia, such as the Su-30SM, as well as various other advanced defense systems.
Kazakhstan plans to acquire three squadrons of 36 Su-30SM aircraft. — DSA
