Pantsir-SMD: Russia’s Latest Air Defence System Packs 48 Missiles to Crush Drone Threats

The latest Pantsir-SMD system features an upgraded fire control suite and a 48-round missile capacity, redefining Russia’s close-range aerial defence capabilities.

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – Russia’s latest generation of short-to-medium range air defence systems, the Pantsir-SMD, developed by High-Precision Systems Holding, a subsidiary of the Rostec State Corporation, is now being actively delivered to frontline units across the country.

This strategic deployment was confirmed by Lieutenant General Alexander Maksimtsev, Chief of the General Staff and First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, in a recent interview with the official military publication Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star).

“In order to strengthen the defence of critical administrative and political centres, vital infrastructure, strategic regions, deployed military groupings, and rear-echelon assets from large-scale aerial assaults by hostile aircraft and missile systems, new Pantsir-SMD surface-to-air missile systems are being rapidly inducted into service,” Maksimtsev stated.

The Pantsir-SMD represents a substantial upgrade within the Pantsir air defence system family, which is globally recognized for integrating both anti-aircraft artillery and surface-to-air missiles on a highly mobile platform capable of operating in contested environments.

According to official specifications, the Pantsir-SMD’s missile launcher tubes can now accommodate up to 48 mini-interceptor missiles, dramatically increasing its engagement envelope, particularly against saturation attacks involving UAV swarms, cruise missiles, and precision-guided munitions.

The configuration of the missile loadout can be customized—allowing operators to deploy a mixture of standard medium-range SAMs and high-speed mini-missiles, enabling flexible response options against a variety of aerial threats, including low-RCS targets and loitering munitions.

The export variant, designated Pantsir-SMD-E, is equipped with a state-of-the-art fire control system that includes a panoramic surveillance radar, multifunctional targeting radar, and an electro-optical tracking suite—delivering 360-degree coverage and high target discrimination in all weather conditions.

One of the system’s most advanced features is its automated kill assessment capability, which allows real-time evaluation of interception success without operator input—dramatically improving the system’s engagement speed, responsiveness, and ability to cope with swarm tactics.

This capability is particularly relevant as Russia, like many militaries, adapts its layered air defence doctrine to meet the growing threat posed by autonomous drone swarms and long-range precision weapons in both conventional and hybrid warfare scenarios.

In a separate media release issued last month, High-Precision Systems Holding confirmed it had begun serial deliveries of newly developed short-range interceptor missiles—miniaturized precision-guided munitions designed for integration into the Pantsir system.

A full batch of these mini-missiles has already been delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defence under the framework of the current State Defence Order.

The compact interceptors are specifically engineered to defeat a wide range of close-range aerial targets, including small and micro UAVs which are increasingly used in reconnaissance and kamikaze roles.

Performance tests previously conducted by the Russian military confirmed both the technical viability and combat effectiveness of the mini-missile’s design, validating its operational readiness.

Each containerized launcher module holds four short-range interceptor missiles, and is fully compatible with the standard launcher interface used for conventional Pantsir missiles—meaning no structural modifications are required for integration.

Furthermore, reloading time remains identical to that of standard ammunition, preserving the system’s rapid turnaround and high operational tempo under sustained fire conditions.

“The introduction of these new mini-missiles significantly increases the Pantsir’s total ammunition load—up to 48 interceptors per system,” said Bekhan Ozdoev, Industrial Director of Rostec’s Armament Cluster and a senior member of the Union of Machine Builders of Russia.

“As a result, the system can now neutralize a greater number of incoming aerial threats, particularly UAVs,” he added.

“This makes it far more difficult for the enemy to deplete the Pantsir’s magazine in an attempt to penetrate the air defence perimeter.”

Depending on mission requirements, Pantsir crews can now select custom loadout combinations of standard and mini-missiles, giving operators increased tactical flexibility in threat-specific engagement scenarios.

These mini-missiles were first unveiled to the global defence community at the World Defense Show 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, signaling Russia’s intent to promote the Pantsir system’s counter-UAV capabilities for export.

They were later exhibited domestically at the Fleet-2024 defence exhibition in Kronstadt, underscoring the growing emphasis within Russian air defence doctrine on multi-layered, modular responses to the evolving aerial threat landscape.
