Malaysia-Turkey to Sign G2G MoU on Defense Products Procurement
According to the Malaysia's Defense Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin Facebook account, key defense industry players from Malaysia and Turkey will also sign Collaboration and Cooperation Agreements.
(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Malaysia and Turkey are set to sign a Government-to-Government (G2G) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the procurement of defense products during the five-day visit of Malaysian Defense Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to the Mediterranean country, starting today.
According to the Defense Minister’s Facebook account, key defense industry players from both nations will also sign Collaboration and Cooperation Agreements.
During his visit to Turkey, Mohamed Khaled is scheduled to meet with the Secretariat of Defense Industries (SSB), a Turkish government institution responsible for managing Turkey’s defense industry and military technology supply.
Similar meetings will take place with its subsidiary and partner, STM.
“While here, I will be visiting Turkish defense companies such as Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), Aselsan, and the Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE), as well as the DESAN Shipyard,” stated Mohamed Khaled on his Facebook page.
The Malaysian Defense Minister remarked that Malaysia and Turkey have already established strong diplomatic ties, including in defense contexts.
He emphasized that this visit would be utilized to further strengthen defense cooperation between the two nations.
“As part of this visit, the inaugural Malaysia-Turkey High-Level Committee on Defence Cooperation (HLC) Meeting will take place.
“This involves delegations from the Malaysian Ministry of Defense and the Turkish Ministry of National Defense (MoND). I am also scheduled to meet with Turkish Defense Minister, H.E. Yaşar Güler,” he added.
Defence Security Asia anticipates that a key discussion topic between the Malaysian Ministry of Defense and major Turkish stakeholders, especially STM, will focus on the construction program for the second batch of Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).
Additionally, the Defense Minister will visit the Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE), which has offered the 155mm 52 Cal wheeled self-propelled artillery system “Yavuz” for use by the Malaysian Army.
“Yavuz” is a leading contender to supply the Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) system to the Malaysian Army.
MKE also aims to replace the long-used 105mm Pack Howitzer in the Malaysian Army with its newly developed 105mm “Boran” gun.
Minister Mohamed Khaled’s visit to Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) is likely focused on a closer examination of the “Anka” drones, which have already been acquired by the Malaysian Ministry of Defense for use by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).
Additionally, there is a potential for the Ministry of Defense and TUSAŞ to refine proposals for Malaysia to join as a partner in the development of the fifth-generation fighter aircraft program, “KAAN.”
TUSAŞ has also developed the “ATAK” attack helicopter and the “Gokbey” medium-sized helicopter which may interest the Malaysian Armed Forces.
