That school draws pilots from multiple partner nations for advanced training, giving the M-346 visibility and credibility with air forces that are not themselves direct operators of the type.
Beyond its schoolhouse role, the M-346 has also established itself as a genuine light multirole fighter capable of conducting independent tactical operations rather than functioning purely as a training aid.
Its handling qualities and overall performance envelope have proven compelling enough to attract the attention of Italy’s own air arm for an entirely different and highly visible mission set.
The Italian Air Force has selected the M-346 as the future aircraft for the Frecce Tricolori, the nation’s premier aerobatic demonstration team, a role that demands exceptional manoeuvrability, reliability, and pilot confidence.
That selection, taken alongside the type’s accumulated operational and training record, reinforces the aircraft’s reputation across both frontline combat-adjacent roles and high-visibility prestige assignments within its home air force.
The AW149 Naval Helicopter Letter Of Intent
Running alongside the firm fighter contract is a separate, earlier-stage agreement addressing a distinct and previously unannounced naval helicopter requirement for the Indonesian Navy.
Leonardo, PT ESystem Solutions, and Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence formally signed a Letter of Intent covering the prospective supply and long-term support of these rotorcraft.
As a Letter of Intent rather than a contract, this agreement signals a clear direction of travel without yet imposing binding purchase obligations on either party, mirroring the earlier stage of the fighter programme back in February.
Should it mature into a firm contract, the platform under consideration is the AW149, a latest-generation multirole medium-weight military helicopter designed to meet demanding armed-forces requirements across a wide mission spectrum.
The stated mission profile centers on search-and-rescue and disaster-relief operations, spanning both land-based deployments and operations conducted from Indonesian Navy vessels at sea.
