Gaza Conflict: 5,000 Israeli Soldiers Injured, 2,000 Face Permanent Disabilities

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Since the outbreak of the conflict in Gaza Strip on October 7th, more than 5,000 members of the Israeli military have sustained injuries, with 2,000 of them officially recognized by the country’s Ministry of Defense as disabled.

According to the Hebrew-language newspaper in Israel, “Yediot Ahronoth,” which exposed the matter, 58 percent of the injured Israeli soldiers suffered severe injuries to their hands and legs, necessitating amputations.

The Israeli newspaper stated that what the Israeli military have experienced has never occurred before.

“Over 5,000 injured military members have been admitted to hospitals in Israel, and more than 2,000 of them have been officially recognized by the Ministry of Defense as disabled,” according to the newspaper.

Deputy Director General and Head of the Rehabilitation Department of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, Limor Luria disclosed to the newspaper that they have never faced such a situation before.

“We have never experienced anything like this. Over 58 percent of those injured have severe injuries to their hands and legs, including forced amputations.”

“More than 12 percent of the injuries involve internal organs such as the spleen, kidneys, and injuries to other organ areas,” she added.

Luria also mentioned that more than 7 percent of the injured military personnel are also experiencing psychological issues, with an expected sudden increase in the number after this.

In a recent interview conducted last month, David Oren Baruch, the director of Mount Herzl Military Cemetery, disclosed that, during that period, an Israeli soldier was laid to rest approximately every one to one and a half hours.

Baruch stated on November 19th, “We are currently experiencing a phase where funerals occur every hour, and every hour and a half, another funeral takes place.”

He highlighted a particularly intense period, noting, “In Mount Herzl cemetery alone, we interred 50 soldiers within a span of 48 hours.”

The Israeli military is currently engaged in a challenging conflict in the southern city of Khan Younis.

According to Yaniv Kubovits, the military affairs correspondent for Haaretz, Israeli army commanders have reported the presence of four Hamas battalions at the site, emphasizing that their capacity to launch attacks against the army remains unaffected.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, since the armed conflict with Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip began on October 7th, 420 members of the country’s military have been confirmed killed.
