Russian Nuclear Submarines Make Bold Resurgence in US Coastal Waters
As reported by Newsweek, the increased frequency of the appearance of Russian nuclear-powered submarines off the coastal waters of the United States, as stated by senior military officials of the country, indeed poses a threat to the security of the nation.
(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — United States Navy’s top officials have expressed their “concerns” about the increasing frequency of the “emergence” of Russian nuclear-powered submarines in the coastal waters of the country recently.
As reported by U.S. media, the increased frequency of the emergence of Russian nuclear-powered submarines off the coast of the United States, as stated by senior military officials of the country, indeed poses a threat to the security of the nation.
According to U.S. military officials, the increased frequency of the “emergence” of Russian nuclear-powered submarines off the coast of the country is occurring even as Moscow is facing conflict with Ukraine.
Michael Peterson, the director of the Russia Maritime Studies Institute (RMSI), an expert on Russia’s maritime capabilities, stated that there are many signs indicating that Russia has increased the deployment of its nuclear-powered submarines to the coastal waters of the United States.
The deployment of both conventional and nuclear-powered submarines is not only targeted at coastal areas of the United States but also in the Mediterranean and around Europe.
What Moscow is currently doing, according to the researcher, is similar to what the Soviet Union did during the tensions of the Cold War.
Russia’s strategy becomes clearer as President Vladimir Putin and top military leaders review several of their naval assets, including their latest nuclear-powered submarine, Generalissimus Suvorov, capable of launching nuclear-guided missiles.
According to the Russian president, the country will build more nuclear-powered submarines to “ensure the security of the country for decades to come.”
Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has tirelessly sought to strengthen its nuclear-powered submarine fleet. In recent years, Moscow has developed various types of nuclear-powered submarines capable of diving into strategic locations in the United States and Europe.
With an estimated ownership of 58 nuclear-powered submarines from several classes, Russia’s nuclear-powered naval assets can be deployed to any location worldwide, including the coastal waters of America.
Russia’s military action in deploying submarines to make appearances in the coastal waters of America is seen as a challenging move against the commanders of the U.S. Navy and to some extent eroding the influence of the Washington military.
Last October, the director of the U.S. Northern Command and NORAD, General Glen VanHerck, issued a warning about the increased presence of the nuclear-powered “Severodvinsk” submarines in the coastal waters of the United States.
Senior officials of the U.S. military have stated that Russia is the biggest threat to their country’s military. “They have just moved their submarines (Severodvinsk class) to the Pacific.”
Commander of the U.S. Navy’s Intelligence Office, Admiral Michael Studeman, reportedly stated that the Severodvinsk class or Yasen class submarines are highly dangerous.
“The submarines (Severodvinsk class) are very modern and have various capabilities. These submarines are very active,” said Studeman, adding that Russian submarines have begun patrolling the waters of Europe, posing a threat to the interests of the United States.
Russian submarines are also present in the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic.
Studeman said that tracking and tracing these Russian submarines pose a “dual threat” to the United States and its allies. — DSA
