Russia Unleashes 1,000km Garpia-A1E Strike Drone on Global Market
Rosoboronexport is offering international customers the Almaz-Antey-built Garpia-A1E, a long-range one-way attack drone carrying a warhead exceeding 50kg and capable of striking fixed targets at least 1,000km away.
(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Russia has launched an international marketing campaign for the Garpia-A1E, a new long-range one-way attack drone capable of striking predetermined targets at distances of at least 1,000km.
The export campaign is being led by JSC Rosoboronexport, Russia’s state-controlled arms exporter operating under the Rostec State Corporation.

The Garpia-A1E was developed and manufactured by the Almaz-Antey Air and Space Defence Corporation, one of the most prominent enterprises within Russia’s defence-industrial complex.
Designed principally to engage stationary targets using specified coordinates, the system represents Moscow’s latest effort to enter the expanding international market for long-range precision-strike drones.
Rosoboronexport claims the Garpia-A1E is currently the only loitering munition available on the global market combining a range of up to 1,000km with a warhead exceeding 50kg.
The company also attributes the drone with a circular error probable, or CEP, of no more than four metres, although these performance claims have not been independently verified.
If confirmed under operational conditions, the combination of range, payload and accuracy would place the Garpia-A1E beyond the capabilities normally associated with tactical battlefield loitering munitions.
Rosoboronexport Director General Alexander Mikheev said the export version had already attracted attention from foreign customers following presentations conducted for several international partners.
According to Mikheev, the system has demonstrated what he described as excellent results during actual tactical employment, although no operational evidence or detailed mission data were released.
Rosoboronexport said it was prepared to negotiate direct deliveries and potential production-localisation arrangements with countries maintaining friendly political and defence relations with Russia.
The offer reflects Moscow’s wider strategy of using technology transfer, domestic assembly and industrial partnerships to retain its position within an increasingly competitive global arms market.
The arrival of the Garpia-A1E could provide selected customers with an intermediate strike capability positioned between shorter-range loitering munitions and considerably more expensive land-attack cruise missiles.
Flying-Wing Design Supports Deep-Strike Missions
The principal attack platform within the Garpia-A1E system is designated BLA-D, a long-range unmanned aircraft employing a flying-wing aerodynamic configuration.
Its design incorporates a rear-mounted pusher propeller, an arrangement that leaves the forward fuselage available for the warhead, navigation equipment and other mission systems.
The BLA-D is powered by a petrol engine rather than an electric propulsion system commonly employed by smaller tactical loitering munitions.
This propulsion configuration is intended to support the endurance and fuel capacity required for missions extending hundreds of kilometres beyond the launch area.
According to Rosoboronexport, the aircraft can operate at altitudes between 50 metres and 2,500 metres, providing flexibility for low-level penetration and higher-altitude transit.
The drone can reportedly reach a maximum speed of at least 170km/h, although its cruising speed and speed profile during the terminal attack phase remain undisclosed.
Its maximum advertised range is at least 1,000km, while its endurance is stated to be no less than six hours under applicable operating conditions.
The aircraft measures 3.4 metres in length, has a wingspan of three metres and possesses a maximum take-off weight of approximately 250kg.
These dimensions make the BLA-D substantially larger than tactical loitering munitions designed primarily to attack vehicles, artillery systems or small battlefield positions.
Its larger airframe, extended endurance and heavy payload instead indicate a weapon optimised for deep attacks against strategically important fixed targets.
Automatic Flight and Claimed Four-Metre Accuracy
Rosoboronexport said the Garpia-A1E conducts its flight automatically after receiving the coordinates and mission parameters associated with a designated target.
Automatic navigation could reduce requirements for continuous operator control and allow the aircraft to operate at distances extending far beyond conventional line-of-sight communications.
The company has not disclosed the complete guidance architecture employed by the export version or explained how the drone achieves its claimed CEP of four metres.
It also remains unclear whether the system incorporates terrain-referenced navigation, inertial guidance, satellite-navigation updates or an electro-optical seeker for terminal correction.
These capabilities would become especially important during missions conducted in environments affected by satellite-navigation jamming, spoofing and other forms of electronic warfare.
A dependence on unprotected satellite navigation could expose long-range drones to interception, diversion or mission failure before reaching their assigned targets.
Conversely, a multi-layered navigation suite combining inertial, satellite and terrain-based guidance could significantly improve the weapon’s resilience during contested operations.
The Garpia-A1E’s reported ability to fly at altitudes as low as 50 metres could allow it to exploit terrain features and gaps in an opponent’s radar coverage.
However, the system’s survivability would ultimately depend on its radar, infrared and acoustic signatures, together with the density of the defending air-defence network.
Rosoboronexport has not published detailed information concerning the drone’s electronic protection, communications architecture, counter-jamming capabilities or radar-cross-section reduction measures.
Warhead Exceeding 50kg Expands Target Set
The Garpia-A1E can carry a warhead weighing more than 50kg, according to the performance specifications released by Rosoboronexport.
A payload in this category would provide significantly greater destructive potential than the smaller explosive charges carried by most tactical loitering munitions.
Potential targets could include command centres, ammunition depots, logistics facilities, radar stations, fuel-storage sites and aircraft positioned at exposed air bases.
The system could also be employed against communications infrastructure, power installations, bridges and other fixed facilities supporting an adversary’s military operations.
Rosoboronexport has not identified the type of warhead intended for export customers or whether alternative payload configurations will be offered.
Different warhead options could theoretically include high-explosive fragmentation, blast, penetration or specialised effects intended for specific categories of fixed targets.
The combination of a heavy warhead and long reach could enable operators to generate strategic effects without deploying crewed aircraft into heavily defended airspace.
It could similarly reduce reliance on conventional cruise missiles, which are generally more sophisticated and considerably more expensive to procure.
Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the weapon would depend on accurate intelligence, reliable target coordinates and a sufficiently robust mission-planning process.
Its focus on predetermined coordinates also means the Garpia-A1E may be less suitable for attacking mobile or time-sensitive targets unless supported by additional surveillance and targeting capabilities.
Strategic Implications of a 1,000km Strike Radius
A strike range of 1,000km would allow the Garpia-A1E to reach targets located deep inside an adversary’s territory while launching from positions well behind friendly front lines.
This reach could expand the number of military installations, logistics nodes and critical infrastructure sites vulnerable to comparatively low-cost unmanned attacks.
Operators could potentially employ indirect flight routes to approach targets from less-defended directions, complicating radar coverage and defensive planning.
Long endurance could also permit coordinated attacks involving multiple drones arriving from different axes within a compressed period.
Such tactics could force defending forces to expend costly surface-to-air missiles against weapons potentially costing significantly less than each interceptor.
Large attack packages could additionally overwhelm radar operators, command networks and short-range air-defence systems through saturation and repeated engagements.
The proliferation of weapons offering this reach could consequently reshape regional deterrence calculations, especially in areas where strategic depth has traditionally protected critical facilities.
Countries lacking advanced combat aircraft or ballistic missiles may view long-range one-way attack drones as a more accessible method of acquiring deep-strike capability.
However, exporting such systems could intensify regional arms competition and accelerate investment in electronic warfare, counter-drone technology and layered air defences.
The Garpia-A1E therefore represents not merely a new export product but another indication that long-range unmanned strike systems are becoming central to modern military planning.
Foreign Interest and Local Production Offer
Mikheev said Rosoboronexport had presented the Garpia-A1E to several foreign partners, generating what the company described as early international interest.
Neither Rosoboronexport nor Almaz-Antey identified the countries involved in those discussions or disclosed whether formal negotiations had commenced.
Russia is likely to prioritise markets where governments maintain established defence relationships with Moscow and possess fewer concerns regarding Western sanctions.
Prospective buyers may include countries seeking long-range strike capabilities without accepting the political conditions and export restrictions often attached to Western weapons.
Rosoboronexport’s willingness to negotiate production localisation could substantially increase the system’s attractiveness to customers pursuing national defence-industrial development.
Local assembly could include component manufacturing, final integration, maintenance support, operator training or broader technology-transfer arrangements, depending on the negotiated package.
Such cooperation would allow partner countries to strengthen domestic expertise while reducing their dependence on complete weapon deliveries from overseas.
However, localisation would also require secure access to engines, electronics, navigation equipment and specialised materials throughout the system’s operational life.
International sanctions targeting Russia’s defence sector could complicate financing, insurance, component acquisition and logistical support for prospective customers.
Despite these obstacles, Moscow has increasingly employed industrial partnerships and local manufacturing proposals to sustain its defence exports amid mounting geopolitical pressure.
Serial Production Balances Export and Russian Requirements
Almaz-Antey has mastered serial production of the Garpia-A1E and achieved output levels capable of supporting potential foreign contracts, according to Rosoboronexport.
The company did not disclose the location of the production line, its annual capacity or the number of systems currently being manufactured.
Mikheev said Russian manufacturers must prioritise their contractual obligations to the Russian Ministry of Defence before allocating military equipment for export.
This requirement is particularly significant as Russia continues to consume substantial quantities of unmanned systems during sustained military operations.
Rosoboronexport nevertheless maintains that existing production capacity would enable foreign orders to be completed within competitive delivery periods.
Mikheev claimed overseas deliveries could be fulfilled without compromising Russia’s national defence capability or disrupting supplies to its armed forces.
No export price, delivery schedule or minimum procurement quantity has been announced for the Garpia-A1E system.
A complete contract would likely extend beyond the aircraft to include launch equipment, mission-planning systems, logistical support, training and maintenance infrastructure.
Future agreements could also cover spare parts, technical assistance, domestic assembly and the establishment of local lifecycle-support capabilities.
The global campaign ultimately signals Russia’s intention to make long-range one-way attack drones an increasingly important component of its future defence export portfolio.
