(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — The Egyptian defense industry has unveiled, for the first time to the public, a domestically produced Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) named “RAAD 200” at the recent Egypt Defence Expo, held in the Middle Eastern country.
More than 80% of the components of the “RAAD 200” MLRS are manufactured locally in Egypt, except for its launcher vehicles.
This advanced multiple rocket launcher system is the result of collaboration between the National Organisation for Military Production (NOMP) and the Arab Organisation for Industrialisation (AOI), both government-owned defense agencies operating 18 and 12 defense equipment manufacturing facilities in Egypt, respectively.
NOMP is responsible for the production of the chassis and cabin, while AOI supplies the launcher systems and rockets.
The “RAAD 200” MLRS is expected to enter service with the Egyptian Armed Forces after securing a contract from the country’s Ministry of Defense.
According to NOMP, the Egyptian multiple rocket system has undergone various technical tests and has been evaluated by the country’s ground forces.
The entire multiple rocket system has a weight of 12 tons and can carry a payload of 4.7 tons, including its launcher system and rockets of various calibers.
The development of this MLRS also signifies the success of modernization efforts within the Egyptian military, which has historically relied on the Russian-produced BM-21 multiple rocket system.
The tracked vehicle-based multiple rocket launcher has an operational radius of 400 km and can move at a speed of 45 km/h.
Operated by a crew of three, the “RAAD 200” MLRS from the Egyptian defense industry has the capability to launch 30 “Grad/Sakr” High-Explosive (HE) rockets with a caliber of 122mm at targets located 45 km away.
In addition to the 122mm “Grad/Sakr” rockets, the Egyptian-produced multiple rocket system can also launch rockets of various calibers, including “Sakr” rockets equipped with Thermobaric explosives, at distances ranging from 6 km to 20 km.
The “RAAD 200” MLRS has the capability to launch 30 rockets in less than 12 seconds, demonstrating its ability to be rapidly deployed to relevant locations within a short timeframe. — DSA
