(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – The Pakistan military successfully conducted a test launch of its latest Anti-Ship Ballistic Missile (ASBM), according to a statement released on November 5 via social media.
The statement noted that the anti-ship ballistic missile has a range of 350km and is capable of targeting both land and sea-based assets.
Reports indicate the missile was developed by Pakistani weapons experts, though limited details are available.
The missile is said to feature advanced navigation systems and high maneuverability.
A video of the launch showed the missile being fired from one of Pakistan’s Zulfiquar-class frigates (F-22P) and hitting its target with high accuracy.
Pakistan’s Navy currently operates four Zulfiquar-class frigates, modeled after China’s Type 053 warship design, each equipped with eight missile launchers.
The missile bears the name “SMASH,” likely its official designation by Pakistan’s military.
The launch test was witnessed by senior officers from the Pakistan Navy, along with Pakistani weapons engineers and scientists.
President, Prime Minister, and senior government officials congratulated the Pakistan Navy on the successful missile test.
With a 350km range, the “SMASH” anti-ship ballistic missile (designated P282) significantly enhances the Pakistan Navy’s offensive and defensive capabilities, especially in Anti-Area Access Denial (A2/AD) operations.

In addition to targeting both land and sea assets, the missile’s navigation technology enables it to adjust direction and speed mid-flight, making it difficult for air defense systems to intercept.
The “SMASH” missile strengthens Pakistan’s strategic balance in the Indian Ocean.
It reportedly shares specifications with the CM-401 anti-ship ballistic missile developed by China, capable of targeting large and medium-sized ships.
This close collaboration in military technology underscores the strong defense relationship between Pakistan and China.

China’s arms exports to Pakistan play a vital role in Beijing’s foreign policy, enabling Pakistan to enhance its military capabilities.
The close alliance between the two countries provides Islamabad with access to advanced, precise, and fast weaponry, challenging to acquire independently without alignment with a major power like China. – DSA
