Photographs circulated during September 2026 show aircraft 22-104 bearing a Mirage 2000 silhouette and 22-118 carrying a Rafale marking, associating both fighters with Pakistani claims from the large-scale engagement fought during Operation Sindoor.

Both aircraft serve with No. 15 Squadron “Cobras” at PAF Base Minhas in Kamra, the formation credited by Pakistan with conducting beyond-visual-range interceptions against Indian fighters during the crisis’s opening night on 6–7 May 2025.

Pakistan claimed its J-10CE formation destroyed six Indian aircraft using PL-15E beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles. 

Photographed wreckage has provided stronger evidence for at least one Rafale loss near Akalia Kalan and Mirage 2000-related debris around Wuyan and Pampore, supporting the occurrence of Indian attrition.

Debris and an external fuel tank associated with a French-designed aircraft were photographed around Wuyan and Pampore, making that location comparatively well documented, although those remains cannot independently identify the Pakistani fighter responsible for launching any missile.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described a Mirage 2000 as Pakistan’s sixth Indian fighter victory on 16 May 2025, linking the claimed interception to Pampore and incorporating it into the PAF’s wider six-kill narrative.

However, attribution to aircraft 22-104 derives from its painted marking and subsequent Pakistani identification, rather than publicly available radar reconstruction, weapons-system recordings or verifiable engagement data establishing the complete sensor-to-shooter sequence.

Aircraft 22-118 represents a later production batch and displays a Rafale silhouette on its left nose, becoming the second publicly identified Pakistani J-10CE carrying such a marking after aircraft 22-111.

Pakistan subsequently provided Dassault with four Rafale tail numbers it alleged were destroyed, but only BS001 has been independently associated with wreckage recovered near Akalia Kalan, approximately 70–90 kilometres inside Indian territory.

No public information specifies which claimed Rafale loss is represented by the marking on 22-118, preventing a reliable connection between that particular aircraft, an individual pilot, a missile launch and a confirmed crash site.

This evidentiary gap matters because networked air warfare distributes detection, tracking, targeting and engagement functions across multiple platforms, meaning the aircraft carrying a marking may commemorate a collective kill chain rather than an independently executed interception.

Another pilot appearing with aircraft 22-116 described the J-10CE as “half a generation ahead” of the F-16C/D, a promotional assessment that signals institutional confidence but remains neither an independently measured technical conclusion nor combat proof.

For foreign air forces studying the confrontation, the principal lesson concerns kill-chain resilience: an advanced fighter becomes strategically vulnerable whenever adversary sensors, datalinks and long-range missiles generate earlier awareness and superior engagement geometry.
