Maritime Malaysia Acquires Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) from Türkiye

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime Malaysia) is set to acquire a Multi-Purpose Mission Ship (MPMS) built by Turkish shipbuilder Desan Shipyard.
The document exchange for the versatile, multi-mission vessel was formalized in Putrajaya during the visit of Türkiye’s President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to Malaysia today.
The document for the Turkish-built vessel was part of a broader exchange of 11 documents witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Erdoğan in Putrajaya.
The document exchange for the MPMS was conducted between Datuk Awang Alik Jeman, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Home Affairs, and Cenk Ismail Kaptanoglu, Chairman of Desan Shipyard’s Board of Directors.
At this stage, no further details have been disclosed regarding MMEA’s acquisition of the MPMS.
However, in October last year, MMEA’s Director-General, Maritime Rear Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, stated that the agency had been allocated RM350 million for the procurement of a Multi-Purpose Mission Ship.
He noted that the vessel would enhance MMEA’s (Maritime Malaysia) operational effectiveness at sea, equipping it with multi-mission operational capabilities for a more efficient maritime presence.
The MPMS is a vessel designed to perform multiple maritime operations within a single platform.
It is commonly utilized by navies and maritime security agencies to fulfill various mission requirements without relying on multiple specialized vessels.
MPMS designs often incorporate modular capabilities, allowing the ship to be adapted for different missions by modifying its equipment or configuration.
This versatile approach offers operational and cost efficiencies compared to maintaining multiple mission-specific vessels.
