(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — The Turkish defense industry has achieved another historic milestone with the successful development of a long-range anti-tank guided missile system, “LUMTAS-GM” by its defense firm, ROKETSAN.
This long range anti-tank missile system has the capability to engage targets at distances ranging from 16km to 20km, surpassing the capabilities of similar anti-tank guided missile systems produced by the United States, Russia, European countries, and China.
The “LUMTAS-GM” anti-tank guided missile system, with its 16km engagement range, is considered superior to the capabilities of anti-tank guided missile systems available in the market, including those produced by the United States, Russia, European nations, and China.
As of now, there is no known anti-tank guided missile system in the market that can compete with the range of the “LUMTAS-GM.”
International defense observers consider this Turkish product revolutionary due to its significantly extended engagement range, especially at a time when other nations are developing advanced and high-capability products.
 The ongoing armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia has underscored the crucial role played by long-range anti-tank guided missiles, such as the American-made Javelin and the Russia’s Vikhr anti-tank guided missile launched from the combat helicopter Kamov KA-52.
The “LUMTAS-GM” long-range guided anti-tank missile, developed by ROKETSAN, is expected to be utilized by Turkish combat helicopters and unmanned aerial systems.
This anti-tank guided missile employs laser and infrared guidance systems for precision targeting.
With its impressive 16km engagement range, this latest long-range anti-tank guided missile from the Turkish defense firm will provide a tactical advantage to combat helicopters like the “T-129 ATAK” and Turkish drones such as “ANKA,” “Bayraktar TB2,” and “Akinci.”
Recently, ROKETSAN conducted a test launch of the “LUMTAS-GM” long-range guided anti-tank missile system.
According to the country’s defense media, the total weight of the entire long-range anti-tank system is 41.3kg, including the canister containing the guided missile.
The overall length of the guided missile is 1.72 meters, and when launched from a combat helicopter, it can engage targets at distances ranging from 16km to 20km.
 In comparison, Russian anti-tank guided missiles like the 9M113 Konkurs, 9M133M Kornet-M, and 9K111 Fagot have engagement ranges below 5km while the American-made anti-tank guided missiles, such as Javelin, have a range of 4km, TOW has a range of 3.75km, and Europe-developed MILAN has a range of 3km.
With a range of 16km, Turkish combat helicopters and drones can play a strategic role similar to the combat helicopter Kamov KA-52 equipped with the Vikhr guided missile in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The presence of the Russian Kamov KA-52 combat helicopter, armed with the long-range guided anti-tank Vikhr missile, successfully altered the dynamics on the battlefield by destroying numerous armored and shielded vehicles belonging to the Ukrainian military.
