(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has unveiled the first images of the launch tests for the upgraded Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile (SSM), currently under development.
According to ATLA, five launch tests of the anti-ship missile were conducted between early October and early November 2024 on Niijima Island, facing the Pacific Ocean.
The upgraded Type 12 SSM aims to significantly increase its range from the original 200 km to at least 900 km, with a long-term goal of extending its range further to 1,200 km.
In addition to its extended range, the missile’s design has been enhanced with stealth features by reducing its Radar Cross Section (RCS).
The upgraded version also incorporates Up to Date Command (UDTC) technology, enabling the missile to receive real-time updates via satellite communications for more precise targeting of moving objects.
ATLA described the tests as a critical step toward deploying advanced long-range defense systems.

BRIEF:

Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has revealed the first images of the upgraded Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile (SSM) undergoing testing. Conducted between October and November 2024 on Niijima Island, the tests are a major milestone for the missile’s development. The upgraded missile, designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, aims to extend its range from 200 km to 900 km, with a long-term goal of reaching 1,200 km.

Enhanced with stealth features and equipped with Up to Date Command (UDTC) technology, the missile is capable of receiving real-time satellite updates for precise targeting of moving objects. ATLA emphasizes the tests as a step toward deploying advanced standoff defense systems that can neutralize threats at significant distances.

The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) is preparing to establish a missile testing facility on Minamitori Island by 2026 to support the program. Deployment of the upgraded Type 12 SSM is set for fiscal year 2025, a year ahead of schedule.

Additionally, Japan and the United States are developing a joint military strategy, including deploying missile units to strategic locations like the Nansei Islands and the Philippines, to address regional threats and potential Taiwan contingencies. This collaboration reflects efforts to bolster defense capabilities amid growing security challenges from China, North Korea, and Russia.

“The launch tests for both ground-based and ship-based variants of the upgraded Type 12 SSM are part of efforts to develop standoff defense capabilities that can intercept and neutralize threats at an early stage and from significant distances,” the agency stated.
In July 2024, Japan’s Ministry of Defence released detailed images of the missile prototype, showcasing its modified design.
The upgraded Type 12 SSM closely resembles the Storm Shadow/SCALP EG, a Franco-British stealthy cruise missile.
Designed and built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the missile highlights Japan’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities.
The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) plans to establish its first missile testing range on Minamitori Island, located in the northwest Pacific Ocean approximately 1,800 km from Tokyo.
The facility is expected to be operational by 2026 and will focus on testing the upgraded Type 12 SSM.

The development of this testing range underscores Japan’s dedication to enhancing its anti-strike missile systems, particularly in the face of regional threats from China, North Korea, and Russia.
By extending the range and accuracy of its missile systems, Japan aims to bolster its defense posture and contribute to regional stability.
In December 2023, then-Defense Minister Minoru Kihara announced that the land-based upgraded Type 12 SSM would be deployed by the JGSDF in fiscal year 2025, a year earlier than initially planned.
According to a recent report by Japan Times,  the country and the United States are developing a joint military plan to address potential security threats, including a Taiwan contingency.
The plan, expected to be finalized by the end of the year, involves deploying missile units to Japan’s Nansei Islands, including Kagoshima and Okinawa prefectures, as well as to the Philippines.
This initiative is aimed at strengthening regional defense capabilities in the face of escalating security challenges. — DSA
