Iran’s saturation attacks reportedly consumed 65 per cent of America’s Patriot interceptors and 86 per cent of Saudi Arabia’s PAC-3 inventory, exposing production bottlenecks that could weaken Gulf security and US readiness for a Western Pacific conflict.

Saudi Arabia reportedly expended approximately 2,400 of its estimated 2,800 PAC-3 interceptors during the conflict’s first 38 days, consuming 86 per cent of its pre-war inventory and leaving around 400 missiles by April 2026.
American forces simultaneously used an estimated 65 per cent of their Patriot interceptor inventory between February and July, reducing an assessed pre-war stockpile of approximately 2,330 modern PAC-3 variants to fewer than 850 missiles.

These figures remain analytical estimates because exact inventories, expenditure rates and operational reserves are classified, but their broad trajectory indicates that successful missile defence imposed an extraordinary logistical and financial burden upon Washington and its Arab allies.
Patriot batteries intercepted a large proportion of Iranian ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, protecting coalition bases, deployed forces and critical infrastructure, although interception performance remained imperfect under sustained and increasingly complex saturation attacks.
Iran’s combination of inexpensive drones, cruise missiles and ballistic weapons forced defenders to detect, classify and engage multiple threat categories simultaneously, creating an unfavourable cost-exchange ratio and accelerating consumption of the coalition’s most sophisticated interceptors.

Comparable inventory pressure reportedly affected the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, transforming interceptor depletion from a Saudi-American problem into a regional force-posture challenge affecting the entire Gulf ballistic-missile defence network.
THAAD reserves also reportedly declined from approximately 452 interceptors before the war to between 234 and 278, narrowing the available second layer for intercepting ballistic threats at higher altitudes and longer engagement distances.
Washington and its allies therefore face a strategic dilemma between conserving interceptors for their most dangerous targets and maintaining comprehensive protection for dispersed airfields, command centres, energy facilities, ports and civilian population centres.
The campaign consequently changes the battlespace beyond Iran by demonstrating that even tactically successful missile interception can generate strategic vulnerability when defender inventories, industrial capacity and delivery timelines cannot sustain prolonged high-intensity warfare.
Saudi Arabia’s 86 Per Cent PAC-3 Expenditure Transforms Gulf Air Defence
Saudi Arabia entered the conflict with an estimated 2,800 PAC-3 interceptors, primarily advanced Missile Segment Enhancement variants designed for hit-to-kill interception of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and other high-performance airborne threats.
Expenditure of approximately 2,400 interceptors within 38 days represents an average approaching 63 missiles daily, although actual firing rates would have fluctuated sharply according to Iranian strike intensity, target prioritisation and engagement doctrine.
A residual inventory of around 400 missiles could theoretically support only 100 engagements if four interceptors were allocated per target, illustrating how seemingly substantial stockpiles rapidly become operationally restrictive during sustained ballistic-missile warfare.
The calculation remains illustrative rather than predictive because commanders may launch fewer interceptors against lower-risk threats, withhold fire when trajectories miss defended assets, or use alternative systems when engagement geometry permits.
Nevertheless, diminished PAC-3 reserves constrain Saudi Arabia’s capacity to protect simultaneously its air bases, command infrastructure, population centres, oil-processing facilities, export terminals and desalination plants against another concentrated Iranian missile offensive.
A saturation campaign does not need to destroy every defended target to achieve strategic effect, because forcing repeated defensive launches can exhaust interceptors, expose gaps between batteries and compel commanders to accept progressively greater operational risk.
Iranian drones and cruise missiles further complicate this equation by consuming surveillance capacity, command attention and sometimes expensive interceptors, while ballistic weapons descend at speeds requiring immediate decisions with minimal opportunity for human reassessment.
Saudi forces could adopt increasingly selective engagement criteria, prioritising missiles threatening critical infrastructure while accepting calculated risks elsewhere, but such conservation measures would transfer vulnerability toward less protected military, economic or civilian assets.
Emergency redeployment of allied batteries might reinforce particular sectors, yet every transferred launcher, radar and interceptor shipment would weaken another defended location while increasing demands upon airlift, sealift, maintenance personnel and secure storage facilities.
The Saudi depletion rate therefore represents more than a munitions shortage, revealing how Iran can use sustained strike volume to impose defensive exhaustion, disrupt coalition force allocation and pressure Gulf governments without achieving complete penetration.

America’s Shrinking Patriot and THAAD Reserves Weaken Regional Force Posture
The United States reportedly began with approximately 2,330 modern Patriot interceptors before expending around 65 per cent between February and July, leaving an estimated 759 to 827 missiles available by late July 2026.
Fewer than 850 remaining interceptors would need to support deployed forces, homeland training, contingency reserves and overseas commitments, making the inventory’s distribution almost as consequential as its nominal size during another regional escalation.

Defensive vulnerability can consequently generate offensive constraints because commanders may disperse aircraft, move headquarters, reduce ground concentrations or delay deployments when adequate ballistic-missile protection cannot be guaranteed around critical operational nodes.
THAAD depletion compounds the problem because its interceptors provide higher-altitude terminal defence against ballistic missiles, complementing Patriot batteries and creating layered engagement opportunities intended to destroy threats before they reach protected areas.
With estimated THAAD reserves falling to between 234 and 278 interceptors, commanders possess fewer opportunities for layered shots, increasing reliance upon Patriot units whenever higher-tier interceptions fail, become unavailable or cannot cover relevant trajectories.
Naval Standard Missiles offer another defensive option, but warships cannot always occupy ideal positions, maintain continuous coverage or provide sufficient magazines without exposing themselves and diverting vessels from strike, escort and maritime-security missions.
Aegis-equipped ships must also manage finite vertical-launch cells containing weapons for air defence, ballistic-missile interception, anti-submarine warfare and land attack, turning every interceptor allocation into a broader naval mission-planning decision.
The logistics footprint extends beyond missiles because sustained Patriot operations require launcher reloads, radar maintenance, generator support, spare components, trained crews, secure communications and protected transportation routes connecting ports, depots and firing positions.
American force posture is therefore becoming increasingly inventory-sensitive, with operational planning determined not solely by available launchers but by whether sufficient interceptors, technicians and resupply capacity exist to sustain those systems under attack.
Iran’s Saturation Strategy Exploits the Defender’s Cost and Magazine Disadvantages
Iran’s missile campaign demonstrated that saturation warfare can achieve strategic effects even when most incoming weapons are intercepted, because each defensive engagement consumes expensive munitions whose replacement may require several years rather than several days.
An Iranian attack combining drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles creates layered timing, altitude and velocity problems, forcing defenders to coordinate multiple sensors and weapons while distinguishing lethal threats from decoys or trajectories requiring no interception.
PAC-3 MSE uses hit-to-kill technology to destroy high-speed targets through direct impact, providing sophisticated terminal defence but demanding advanced seekers, propulsion systems, guidance electronics and precision manufacturing that cannot be expanded immediately during wartime.
Launching several interceptors improves the cumulative probability of destroying an incoming missile, particularly when targets manoeuvre, deploy countermeasures or approach defended assets at extreme velocities, but this practice multiplies expenditure during every engagement cycle.
Three PAC-3 MSE rounds would cost approximately US$12 million to US$15 million, equivalent to RM48 million to RM60 million, while a four-interceptor salvo could reach US$20 million, or RM80 million.
The attacker therefore gains economic leverage whenever a comparatively inexpensive drone or missile triggers a multimillion-dollar response, although cost comparisons alone cannot capture the potentially catastrophic value of the base or infrastructure being defended.
Commanders may reserve Patriot interceptors for ballistic missiles while assigning cheaper systems to drones and cruise missiles, but dense raids can blur classifications, compress decision timelines and overwhelm lower-tier defences before targets enter terminal engagement zones.
Iran could also vary launch intervals and approach vectors to keep radars operating, crews at elevated readiness and batteries repeatedly repositioning, generating mechanical wear and personnel fatigue alongside the measurable depletion of interceptor magazines.
This strategy does not guarantee Iranian penetration because integrated air defence retains substantial sensing and engagement advantages, yet it shifts the contest toward industrial endurance, magazine depth and coalition-wide allocation rather than individual missile performance.
The central military lesson is that interception success rates cannot independently measure strategic victory, because a defender protecting today’s targets by exhausting tomorrow’s arsenal may emerge tactically successful but progressively less prepared for subsequent warfare.
PAC-3 Production Bottlenecks Make Rapid Replenishment Operationally Impossible
Global PAC-3 MSE production has remained around 600 to 620 interceptors annually, meaning Saudi Arabia’s estimated 38-day expenditure alone represented nearly four years of output at the existing worldwide manufacturing rate.
Production is centred principally around Lockheed Martin’s Camden, Arkansas facility, where expansion depends upon specialised machinery, qualified workers, component suppliers, rocket motors, seekers and testing infrastructure that cannot be multiplied through funding alone.
Contract-to-delivery timelines commonly extend from 24 to more than 36 months, ensuring that approved purchases do not immediately restore combat readiness and leaving current operators dependent upon existing reserves or politically sensitive emergency reallocations.
Plans reportedly seek to raise PAC-3 MSE output toward approximately 2,000 missiles annually around 2030 through multiyear procurement, expanded facilities, workforce investment and strengthened component supply chains, but this target remains several years away.
A proposed contracting framework valued at up to approximately US$58.6 billion, equivalent to RM234.4 billion, indicates the enormous financial scale required to rebuild inventories and establish production capacity suitable for sustained high-intensity conflict.
Even at 2,000 missiles annually, replacing the estimated 2,400 interceptors expended by Saudi Arabia and roughly 1,500 used by the United States would absorb almost two years of theoretical production before satisfying other international customers.
Actual replenishment would take longer because new output must serve American forces, Gulf partners, European allies, Ukraine and additional Patriot operators, all competing for the same interceptors, rocket motors, electronics and delivery slots.
Saudi Arabia has approved or pending Foreign Military Sales covering hundreds of additional interceptors, but procurement authorisation should not be confused with physical availability because production queues and integration requirements postpone their arrival.
Washington could redistribute missiles from other commands or allied inventories, yet transfers would move strategic risk rather than eliminate it, potentially weakening European, Asian or homeland readiness to reinforce an already depleted Middle Eastern posture.
The replenishment crisis consequently reflects a defence-industrial-base problem created by decades of comparatively low peacetime demand, limited surge capacity and procurement models unsuited to missile-consumption rates generated by modern saturation warfare.
Western Pacific Readiness Becomes the Conflict’s Most Consequential Global Risk
The most important consequence extends beyond the Gulf because diminished Patriot and THAAD inventories reduce American flexibility during a potential Western Pacific confrontation, where Chinese missile forces could generate substantially greater consumption across geographically dispersed bases.
American installations in Japan, Guam and other Indo-Pacific locations depend upon layered air and missile defence against ballistic, cruise and potentially hypersonic threats targeting runways, fuel farms, ports, command centres and aircraft shelters.
A China-related contingency would require protection across a far larger theatre than the Gulf, with long maritime supply lines and multiple threatened islands making interceptor distribution, launcher mobility and magazine replenishment exceptionally difficult.
Pre-war American inventories were already considered potentially insufficient for sustained peer conflict, and the Iran campaign widened that deficit by consuming missiles that cannot be replaced rapidly through current production or alternative defensive systems.
Reallocating interceptors toward the Indo-Pacific could leave Middle Eastern partners more exposed, while retaining missiles in the Gulf might weaken deterrence in Asia, creating a cross-theatre force-allocation dilemma that adversaries could exploit simultaneously.
China can observe how Iranian saturation attacks influenced American interceptor expenditure, engagement doctrine and logistics, providing operational evidence that large missile inventories may erode US defensive capacity even without destroying every intended target.
This does not mean Patriot depletion automatically produces Chinese military advantage, because American and allied defence includes dispersal, hardening, deception, aircraft mobility, naval interception and retaliatory capabilities extending beyond land-based missile defence.
However, reduced interceptor depth narrows commanders’ margins for error, increases dependence upon early warning and selective engagement, and strengthens the importance of resilient logistics capable of moving missiles rapidly between threatened operational sectors.
The public figures remain estimates derived from procurement records, reported usage and analytical modelling, while official inventories remain classified and may include variants, reserves or transferred stocks not captured by external assessments.
Even with those uncertainties, the strategic direction is unmistakable: Iran converted missile volume into coalition-wide inventory pressure, exposing how industrial capacity, logistics endurance and interceptor depth now determine the credibility of American global force posture.
