(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Few Western artillery systems have made as deep an impression on Southeast Asia’s militaries as the CAESAR, the 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer built by the French-German defense conglomerate KNDS, formerly known as Nexter Systems.
Combining a full-caliber 155mm/52-calibre gun with a lightweight, air-transportable truck chassis, the CAESAR has spent nearly two decades proving itself in some of the world’s harshest conflict zones, from the deserts of the Middle East to the trenches of Ukraine.
Now, as of mid-2026, it has become the artillery system of choice for three Southeast Asian armies: Indonesia, Thailand, and, most recently, Malaysia.

Their combined orders have pushed the number of CAESAR units contracted across Asia past 110 systems, a figure that continues to climb as new deals are finalized.
The system’s real-world debut in a regional shooting war, the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict of 2025, has given the region a rare, live demonstration of what modern wheeled artillery can do under actual combat conditions.
With Indonesia, Thailand, and now Malaysia all fielding or committing to the platform, no rival wheeled or tracked self-propelled howitzer comes close to matching CAESAR’s regional footprint.
That reach has led industry observers to increasingly describe it as the undisputed “King of Self-Propelled Howitzers” in Southeast Asia, a title reinforced by each new national procurement announcement.
Malaysia’s decision in mid-2026 to join the CAESAR family only cements that reputation further, marking the third consecutive Southeast Asian nation to select the French gun over rival systems from South Korea, Turkey, China, and Eastern Europe.
This article surveys where CAESAR stands operationally across Southeast Asia today, beginning with an explanation of what sets the platform apart technically from other self-propelled artillery systems on the market.

Unlike tracked self-propelled howitzers such as the American M109 or the South Korean K9 Thunder, CAESAR mounts its 155mm barrel on a 6×6, or in newer variants an 8×8, truck chassis rather than an armored tracked hull.
In its lightest configuration the system weighs under 18 tonnes, a fraction of a tracked platform’s weight, which fundamentally changes how it can be moved, maintained, and deployed.
That low weight allows CAESAR to be transported by medium military airlifters, driven on ordinary public roads at highway speed, and deployed with a much smaller logistics footprint than tracked artillery typically requires.
That mobility comes paired with genuine firepower rather than being a compromise that sacrifices range or accuracy for portability.
The gun can strike targets beyond 40 kilometers using standard base-bleed rounds, and rocket-assisted projectiles push that reach past 55 kilometers, putting it in the same performance class as far heavier and far more expensive tracked systems.
A trained crew can fire and displace within minutes, a so-called “shoot-and-scoot” capability that reduces vulnerability to counter-battery fire, an increasingly important concern in an era of drone-assisted target acquisition on the battlefield.
KNDS has marketed the platform heavily on its combat record, stating that CAESARs have fired more than 100,000 shells and logged over a million kilometers of travel, including tens of thousands of kilometers under combat conditions in Afghanistan, Mali, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, and the Sahel region.
For archipelagic and geographically fragmented nations like Indonesia and Malaysia, where units may need to be shipped or flown between islands, these mobility characteristics have proven more attractive than the added armor protection offered by a tracked platform.
The same logic applies to a country like Thailand, which must be able to move fire support quickly along a long and, as 2025 demonstrated, genuinely contested land border.


Indonesia: The Region’s Largest and Most Established Operator
Indonesia was the first Southeast Asian country to adopt the CAESAR and remains, by a wide margin, its biggest regional user, having built up its fleet over more than a decade.
The Indonesian Army, known as TNI AD, placed an initial order for 36 CAESAR 6×6 Mk I systems in 2012, a contract worth roughly 240 million dollars with Nexter Systems, with the first units arriving in the country in September of that year.
A follow-on order for 18 more systems in 2017 brought Indonesia’s total fleet to 56 guns, which are organized into three artillery battalions spread across the archipelago.
That inventory makes Indonesia the third-largest CAESAR operator in the world after Saudi Arabia and France, and by a comfortable margin the largest operator anywhere in Asia.
Indonesia’s relationship with KNDS has moved well beyond simple procurement in recent years, evolving into a broader industrial partnership.
During French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Jakarta in May 2025, part of a wider Indo-Pacific tour, Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence signed a Letter of Intent covering additional CAESAR systems and accompanying 155mm ammunition.
Crucially, that agreement placed heavy emphasis on local industrial cooperation, sovereignty, and production capability rather than functioning as a simple foreign purchase of finished hardware.
That intent was formalized further the following month at the Indo Defence Expo in Jakarta, where KNDS France signed a memorandum of understanding with the state-owned arms manufacturer Pindad covering joint work on artillery systems and large-caliber ammunition, including a staged transfer of production capability onto Indonesian soil.
KNDS France’s chief executive described the plan as an incremental one, under which components and subassemblies would first be co-produced and integrated in Indonesia, with local capability expanding step by step over time rather than through a single one-off technology transfer.
With KNDS also developing a next-generation CAESAR Mk II, known as CAESAR NG, slated for delivery to the French Army between 2026 and 2030, Indonesia is positioned as a likely early adopter of the newer variant given both its scale as a customer and its deepening industrial partnership with the manufacturer.
Thailand: A Smaller Fleet, But Real Combat Experience
Thailand’s CAESAR fleet is far smaller than Indonesia’s, numbering around six systems according to industry figures cited during coverage of Malaysia’s 2026 procurement, but it holds a distinction none of the other regional operators can claim.
It is the first, and so far only, CAESAR unit in Southeast Asia to see actual combat, giving Thailand a genuine operational data point that its neighbors currently lack.
The Royal Thai Army operates the howitzer alongside a diverse mix of other 155mm platforms, including American-derived M109 tracked self-propelled guns and Israeli ATMOS 2000 wheeled howitzers, as part of a broader modernization of the country’s fire-support arm.
That modernization was tested in dramatic fashion in 2025, when long-simmering tensions with Cambodia finally boiled over into open warfare.
A long-running territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over ancient temple sites along their shared border erupted into open fighting after a deadly skirmish near the Temple of Preah Vihear in late May 2025.
Tensions escalated through the summer, and on July 24, 2025, full-scale clashes broke out near the Ta Muen Thom temple complex, spreading across a dozen border locations over several days of intense fighting.
The fighting involved not just infantry and small arms but rocket and howitzer artillery, drones, and fighter jets, representing a scale and intensity of combat unseen between the two countries in over a decade.
A ceasefire brokered in Kuala Lumpur under ASEAN’s chairmanship halted the first round of fighting on July 28 and 29, 2025, and a more comprehensive Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord was signed that October at the ASEAN Summit, though the calm did not last.
A second major flare-up broke out in December 2025, marked by a reported Cambodian civilian casualty from cross-border fire and a Thai curfew imposed in Trat Province, before a 72-hour ceasefire was brokered on December 27, 2025.
Throughout both rounds of fighting, Thai forces drew on their mixed fleet of towed and self-propelled 155mm systems, including the CAESAR, to answer Cambodian rocket and howitzer fire, marking the platform’s first use in an active interstate conflict anywhere in the Southeast Asian theater.
Malaysia: The Newest Entrant, With Industrial Strings Attached
The most significant recent development for CAESAR in the region came in June 2026, when Malaysia signed a contract at the Eurosatory defense exhibition in Paris for 18 CAESAR 6×6 systems.
That contract made Malaysia the fifteenth country worldwide to adopt the platform and the third in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and Thailand had already done so.
The deal was formalized between KNDS and Malaysia’s local industrial partner, Advanced Defence Systems, and followed years of evaluation in which the Malaysian Ministry of Defence weighed CAESAR against half a dozen competing 155mm self-propelled systems.
The path to the contract ran through Malaysia’s own defense exhibitions and budget cycles rather than emerging suddenly at Eurosatory.
At the Defence Services Asia exhibition held in Kuala Lumpur earlier in 2026, industry sources indicated Malaysia had effectively already settled on CAESAR and was simply awaiting formal government authorization to proceed.
An initial allocation of roughly RM50 million, or somewhere between 10 and 13 million US dollars depending on exchange assumptions, had already been set aside in the 2026 national budget to seed the program ahead of full contract signature.
Several features distinguish the Malaysian program from its regional predecessors, starting with the fact that these will be Malaysia’s first self-propelled artillery systems of any kind.
That represents a genuinely new category of capability for the Malaysian Army, which will stand up an entirely new artillery regiment specifically to operate the incoming guns.
As with Indonesia, the contract is structured around industrial participation rather than a straightforward foreign purchase, including a technology-transfer license and provisions for local assembly of Malaysian Army CAESARs by Advanced Defence Systems.
KNDS and Malaysian officials have explicitly linked the acquisition to rising tensions in the South China Sea and to the operational challenge of projecting fire support across Malaysia’s split geography, with its peninsular mainland separated by sea from East Malaysia on the island of Borneo.
Other Self-Propelled Howitzers in Use Across Southeast Asia
CAESAR does not have the Southeast Asian battlefield entirely to itself, and several of the region’s other militaries operate self-propelled howitzers of very different origins and designs.
Singapore fields the SSPH 1 Primus, a 155mm/39-calibre tracked howitzer developed indigenously from the early 1990s by the Singapore Armed Forces, the Defence Science and Technology Agency, and Singapore Technologies Kinetics, and formally introduced to the Singapore Artillery in 2004.
Built on a chassis derived from the American M109 and sharing components with the ST Kinetics Bionix infantry fighting vehicle, the Primus is a compact, 28-tonne platform designed around the same “hide, shoot, scoot” philosophy that underpins CAESAR, though it trades wheeled road mobility for tracked cross-country performance and carries a shorter maximum range of roughly 30 kilometers.
Vietnam presents the most varied artillery picture in the region, still operating a legacy fleet of Soviet-supplied 2S1 Gvozdika 122mm and 2S3 Akatsiya 152mm tracked self-propelled guns that date back decades but remain in active service.
Hanoi’s state-owned defense conglomerate Viettel has more recently pursued a lower-cost modernization path by mounting existing towed artillery pieces onto modern truck chassis, a program that has produced the PTH105, the PTH130, and, unveiled in 2025, the PTH-152, which pairs a Soviet-era 152mm D-20 gun with a KamAZ 8×8 truck chassis and remains in evaluation rather than frontline service.
Alongside these homegrown efforts, Vietnam signed a landmark 250 million dollar government-to-government deal with South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace in 2025 for 20 K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers, making it the first Southeast Asian country to operate the tracked, 155mm/52-calibre K9, a system widely regarded as a direct rival to CAESAR on the international market.
Myanmar operates a sizable fleet of Chinese-made SH-1 155mm wheeled howitzers, a NORINCO export design broadly comparable in concept to CAESAR, with regional defense trackers estimating the Myanmar Army’s inventory at around 70 units acquired mainly in the early 2010s and used extensively in the country’s long-running counter-insurgency operations.
Cambodia’s Royal Cambodian Army likewise fields a modest number of Chinese SH-1 howitzers, reportedly delivered from 2022 onward alongside PHL-03 and Type 90B multiple rocket launcher systems, and it was this Chinese-supplied artillery and rocket inventory, rather than any Western wheeled howitzer, that Cambodian forces relied on during the 2025 border clashes with Thailand.
By contrast, Laos and Timor-Leste currently have no confirmed self-propelled howitzers in active service, with Laos maintaining a small and largely towed Soviet-era artillery inventory and Timor-Leste’s armed forces possessing no significant heavy artillery capability at all, while the Philippines has moved beyond a purely towed force by fielding 12 Israeli-made Soltam ATMOS 2000 155mm/52-calibre self-propelled howitzers, delivered by Elbit Systems from late 2021 as the Philippine Army’s first self-propelled artillery system in nearly seven decades.
Taken together, this patchwork of tracked Cold War holdovers, Chinese wheeled exports, an indigenous Singaporean design, and now a first Southeast Asian order for the South Korean K9 illustrates that CAESAR’s regional dominance rests less on an absence of alternatives than on its comparatively broad adoption across three separate national programs, each reinforced by industrial partnerships that rival systems have yet to match in the region.
Regional Outlook and the Wider Global Context
Southeast Asia’s adoption of CAESAR is best understood as part of a much larger international growth story rather than an isolated regional trend.
Cumulative global orders for the platform expanded from fewer than 200 systems in 2022 to nearly 800 by mid-2026, a nearly fourfold increase in just four years.
That surge has been driven heavily by European rearmament following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and by CAESAR’s own combat performance in that war, where more than a hundred systems have been delivered or committed by France, Denmark, and an international donor coalition.
Major operators today include Saudi Arabia with over 130 systems, the Czech Republic with 62, and Morocco with 36, alongside France’s own large domestic fleet and its forthcoming CAESAR NG order of 109 guns for delivery between 2026 and 2030.
Within that global surge, Southeast Asia stands out for one specific reason: nearly every regional deal has come bundled with industrial localization rather than a simple cash purchase.
Indonesia’s Pindad partnership, Malaysia’s Advanced Defence Systems arrangement, and the general regional pattern of technology transfer and local assembly reflect a shared expectation that major arms purchases should also build domestic defense-manufacturing capacity.
For KNDS, willingness to accommodate that expectation appears to have been decisive in winning contracts against a crowded field of competitors from Turkey, South Korea, China, and Eastern Europe.
With Indonesia deepening local production, Thailand drawing lessons from its 2025 combat experience along the Cambodian border, and Malaysia standing up its first-ever self-propelled artillery regiment, CAESAR’s regional footprint looks set to keep expanding through the rest of the decade.
The introduction of the CAESAR NG variant later in the 2020s, combined with the region’s ongoing territorial tensions along both the Thai-Cambodian frontier and the South China Sea, suggests that Southeast Asian interest in mobile, long-range, wheeled artillery is unlikely to fade any time soon.
What began as a niche French export a decade ago has, by 2026, become a genuine regional standard for modern fire support, and with three of Southeast Asia’s militaries now operating or committed to the type, Malaysia being the latest, CAESAR has firmly earned its reputation as the King of Self-Propelled Howitzers in Southeast Asia.
