Malaysian Army Aviation’s Pilot Undergoes Blackhawk Simulator Training in Turkey
Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence formalized a contract for the lease of four Black Hawk helicopters during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA '23) held last May.
(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Three helicopter pilots from the Malaysian Army Aviation (PUTD) have been sent to Turkey to undergo training on a Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk simulator at the Havelsan Simulator Training Centre in Turkey recently.
According to social media post by the Malaysian Army, the ground study and Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk helicopter simulator flight training were conducted as part of the preparation for the 882 PUTD Regiment Nucleus Team Pilots in anticipation of operation of the helicopter.
This two-week training regimen encompassed both ground study exercises for the helicopter and simulator flight training for the Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk.
Two S-70 simulators were utilized for the flight simulation exercises.
These S-70 simulators are compliant with the Certification Specification for Flight Simulator Training Device (CS-FSTD) Level-D Full Mission Simulators.
Equipped with motion and vibration systems, these simulators ensure a realistic training experience.
The simulator system also features an internal control station, known as the Instructor Operation Station (IOS), situated at the rear of the cockpit. This enables Flight Instructors to oversee and regulate the desired training protocols.
Havelsan Simulator Training Centre’s simulator system is capable of executing joint training exercises involving multiple aircraft, complemented by an Exercise Control Center for scenario monitoring and management.
The simulator cockpit is outfitted with four Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) capable of presenting Primary Flight Display (PFD), Navigation Display (ND), and Engine Instrument Crew Alerting System (EICAS).
Additionally, the simulator incorporates a Flight Director system, comprising an Automatic Flight Control Computer (AFCC) and Flight Director (FD).
Participants were allocated 30 hours of simulator training, conducted over three hours each day, achieving a commendable 100 percent completion rate within the stipulated timeframe.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence formalized a contract for the lease of four Black Hawk helicopters during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA ’23) held last May.
The leasing agreement, valued at RM187 million, was signed with local firm Aerotree Defence & Services Sdn Bhd for a period of five years.
The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter is a familiar presence in Southeast Asia and Malaysia, as the Malaysian Armed Forces employ it for transporting dignitaries.
In Thailand and the Philippines, the Black Hawk helicopter plays a crucial role in the respective national army’s operations.
The UH-60A Black Hawk helicopter boasts the capacity to transport 11 to 20 fully armed military personnel, along with a pilot, co-pilot, and crew.
The ‘A’ model serves various functions, including utility, air assault, medevac, command and control, and monitoring.
Equipped with two General Electric T700-GE-701 turboshaft engines and a 450-gallon fuel tank, the UH-60A Black Hawk can cover a distance of up to 1,200 nautical miles.
Furthermore, the helicopter can be configured with an External Stores Support System (ESSS), resembling wings. With ESSS, the helicopter can carry up to 16 Hellfire guided missiles externally and reload them mid-mission.
Apart from externally mounted guided missiles on the ESSS, the helicopter can also be armed with a machine gun. — DSA
