Bangladesh Moves for China’s J-10CE, Reshaping South Asia’s Airpower Balance
Bangladesh advances a draft agreement for China’s J-10CE fighter, potentially transforming its combat-air capability and adding a powerful new variable to South Asia’s rapidly evolving military balance.
(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Bangladesh has prepared a draft agreement to acquire China’s J-10CE multirole fighter, advancing its largest prospective combat-aircraft programme while introducing a potent new operational variable into South Asia’s increasingly networked airpower competition.
Prime Minister’s Adviser Zahed Ur Rahman announced the procedural milestone in Dhaka, but stressed that the document supports continuing formal negotiations rather than constituting a signed and executable procurement contract.

The negotiating committee has forwarded the draft to the Armed Forces Division and relevant ministries, placing political approval, fiscal allocation and rigorous inter-agency scrutiny between Bangladesh and any binding government-to-government acquisition agreement.
Aircraft numbers, final pricing, financing, weapons, delivery schedules and support arrangements remain undisclosed, making earlier reports of 20 to 24 fighters and a $2.2 billion comprehensive acquisition package provisional rather than officially confirmed.
Rahman said Bangladesh considered the J-10’s reported performance against Indian Rafales during the May 2025 India–Pakistan confrontation, presenting recent combat experience as an important influence on Dhaka’s emerging platform evaluation and procurement calculus.
“A Chinese-made multirole fighter performed very well in a combat situation against the Rafale,” Rahman said, although the number, circumstances and identities of Indian losses remain publicly contested.
He also argued that Chinese fighters cost considerably less than comparable Rafale or Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, placing procurement affordability beside perceived combat credibility as the government’s declared dual rationale for advancing negotiations with Beijing.
The decision nevertheless extends far beyond aircraft pricing because an operational J-10CE force requires missiles, simulators, hardened maintenance facilities, trained crews, software support, secure data links and dependable wartime supply chains.
For Bangladesh, that integrated combat ecosystem could replace ageing F-7 variants and supplement its limited MiG-29 fleet with active electronically scanned array radar, modern electronic warfare and credible beyond-visual-range engagement capability.
For India, even 20 modern fighters would not reverse its numerical advantage, but their presence near the strategically sensitive Siliguri Corridor would complicate eastern-sector surveillance, dispersal, air defence and rapid reinforcement planning.
For China, a second J-10CE export customer after Pakistan would validate Beijing’s high-end combat-aircraft offering, deepen its Bay of Bengal security footprint and strengthen long-duration defence-industrial influence in Dhaka.
The draft therefore represents neither a completed purchase nor an immediate balance-of-power reversal, but a highly consequential formal step toward reorganising Bangladesh’s future force posture, logistics dependencies and regional strategic signalling.

The draft emerged from negotiations by a government committee handling multirole combat aircraft and attack-helicopter requirements, indicating that Dhaka is coordinating several expensive aviation priorities within a broader national force-modernisation and procurement framework.
Its referral for institutional approval moves the J-10CE programme beyond preliminary exploratory discussion, yet leaves the government free to revise quantities, conditions or schedules before assuming binding contractual and long-term financial obligations.
Rahman said implementation could begin during the current fiscal year if sufficient funding is allocated, directly linking procurement tempo to Bangladesh’s ability to absorb initial acquisition expenditure and recurring long-term sustainment costs.
Without that allocation, the process would move into the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2027, potentially delaying pilot training, infrastructure construction, aircraft production slots, weapons delivery and eventual operational conversion.
Earlier reporting described an approximately $2.2 billion package for 20 aircraft, including roughly $1.2 billion for fighters and the remaining expenditure for spare parts, transport, training, insurance and associated technical support.
Those figures were not repeated in the August announcement, however, and should remain provisional planning indicators until Dhaka confirms the aircraft configuration, weapons inventory, payment schedule and comprehensive through-life support obligations.
Previous proposals reportedly envisaged instalments extending across ten fiscal years, an approach that could ease near-term pressure while committing future governments to sustained payments, maintenance funding and force-generation expenditure.
A programme priced attractively at contract signature can still impose substantial lifecycle costs through engine overhauls, radar components, missile recertification, software upgrades, specialised test equipment and replenishment inventories.
Bangladesh is simultaneously considering other fighters, VIP helicopters, attack helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles, creating budget competition among platforms that require distinct basing, personnel, training and sustainment architectures.
Consequently, the decisive measure is not whether Dhaka can purchase J-10CE airframes, but whether it can continuously generate sufficient combat-ready sorties under fiscal constraints, external supply disruption and sustained wartime attrition.
AESA Radar and PL-15E Missiles Could Transform Bangladesh’s Air Combat Reach
The J-10CE is an export-oriented, single-engine 4.5-generation fighter combining a canard-delta configuration, diverterless supersonic inlet, integrated electronic warfare suite and flexible multirole weapons architecture distributed across eleven external hardpoints.
Its central combat value lies in the interaction among active electronically scanned array radar, infrared search-and-track, helmet-mounted cueing, secure data links and long-range air-to-air weapons rather than aerodynamic performance alone.
Open estimates place radar detection against fighter-sized targets beyond 220 kilometres, but classified operating modes, target signatures, jamming conditions and possible export-system differences prevent reliable independent verification of operational detection ranges.
Paired with the active-radar-guided PL-15E, commonly credited with an export range exceeding 145 kilometres, the fighter could engage threats before Bangladesh’s older aircraft achieve comparable targeting or weapons envelopes.
That capability would shift the Bangladesh Air Force from predominantly point-defence interception toward distributed beyond-visual-range operations, provided external sensors can build persistent tracks and transmit targeting-quality information without unnecessarily exposing vulnerable emitters.
The reported WS-10B afterburning turbofan, Mach 1.8-plus performance and aerial-refuelling compatibility would support rapid concentration across Bangladesh’s compact geography, although payload, altitude and external tanks materially affect combat radius.
Precision-guided bombs, anti-radiation weapons and maritime-strike stores could expand the platform’s mission set well beyond air policing, enabling suppression, offensive counter-air and Bay of Bengal operations if Bangladesh procures appropriate munitions.
Yet advanced missiles are operationally effective only within a resilient kill chain linking radar, airborne early warning, ground controllers, electronic intelligence, identification protocols and commanders authorised to release weapons at extended distance.
Bangladesh would therefore require investment in sensors, communications security, electronic protection and battle management to exploit the J-10CE fully, because isolated fighters cannot reproduce a networked force’s engagement advantage.
The procurement’s military consequence will ultimately depend less on published brochure specifications than on pilot proficiency, mission-data quality, available weapon stocks, sortie generation and integration with Bangladesh’s wider air-defence system.
May 2025 Combat Claims Reshape Procurement Perceptions, Not Settled Evidence
Dhaka’s evaluation gained urgency after the May 2025 India–Pakistan fighting, when Pakistani J-10CEs armed with PL-15E missiles participated in a large standoff air battle involving extensive sensor and electronic-warfare activity.
Pakistan claimed its forces destroyed multiple Indian fighters, including Rafales, without losing J-10CEs, and presented radar tracks, intercepted communications and integrated sensor data as evidence supporting several successful beyond-visual-range interceptions.
India later acknowledged initial aircraft losses and tactical mistakes but rejected Pakistan’s claimed total of six, leaving the precise number, platform identities, engagement geometry and causal sequence disputed.
Physical missile debris and third-party assessments support PL-15E employment and J-10 involvement in successful engagements, yet publicly available evidence does not uniformly corroborate every aircraft loss claimed by Islamabad.
Rahman’s assertion that a Rafale shootdown is established therefore reflects Bangladesh’s publicly stated assessment, whereas the broader Pakistani tally remains a contested wartime claim requiring continued independent scrutiny and analytical caution.
Operationally, the episode underscored that radar coverage, airborne early warning, data-link architecture, electronic warfare, rules of engagement and missile kinematics can collectively outweigh nominal platform comparisons in contested modern air combat.
The J-10CE’s export appeal consequently derives from the perceived performance of a connected Chinese-origin combat system, not merely from claims that one fighter design independently defeated another in isolation.
For prospective operators, favourable combat publicity reduces perceived acquisition risk, but incomplete evidence creates danger if procurement decisions substitute politically attractive narratives for classified evaluation, demanding exercises and independent technical testing.
India’s reported tactical adaptation and subsequent operations also demonstrate that an opening advantage may be temporary, because adversaries can alter routes, formations, emissions, jamming techniques and target priorities.
Bangladesh must accordingly evaluate the J-10CE against its own geography, operational doctrine, threat assumptions and institutional support capacity rather than treating Pakistan’s combat experience as automatically transferable to a differently structured force.
India Faces a More Complex Eastern Flank, Not an Overturned Balance
India’s Eastern Air Command fields substantially greater combat mass, including Su-30MKI and Rafale aircraft supported by airborne early warning, integrated air defence, established bases and a deeper national sustainment structure.
A Bangladeshi fleet of 20 or 24 J-10CEs would therefore not overturn regional air superiority, particularly after accounting for scheduled maintenance cycles, training aircraft, attrition reserves and inherently limited simultaneous mission availability.
Its strategic effect would instead arise from geography and location, because modern long-range fighters operating near India’s eastern approaches could force New Delhi to allocate sensors, interceptors and air-defence weapons across additional threat axes.
The Siliguri Corridor, connecting mainland India with its northeastern states, is especially sensitive because geographic compression magnifies the operational consequences of surveillance gaps, runway disruption, logistics interdiction and reinforcement delays.
India could confront the same J-10CE and PL-15E combination on its Pakistani and Bangladeshi flanks, complicating threat-library development, electronic countermeasures, force allocation and contingency planning across separated theatres.
Common equipment does not create a China–Pakistan–Bangladesh alliance, however, and no publicly disclosed evidence establishes coordinated wartime planning, shared command arrangements, joint operational doctrine or integrated targeting among the three countries.
Indian Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan has warned of a possible “convergence of interests,” but that political assessment should remain distinct from verifiable evidence of institutionalised military interoperability.
New Delhi could respond by strengthening eastern basing, fighter dispersal, airborne surveillance, hardened infrastructure and layered missile defence, although such measures would carry significant opportunity costs for India’s western and maritime requirements.
Dhaka may view the fighters principally as sovereign air-defence instruments and symbols of strategic autonomy, while Indian planners must evaluate capabilities rather than assume declared intentions will remain unchanged.
The resulting security dilemma could accelerate reciprocal modernisation without either side seeking confrontation, because one state’s defensive acquisition often becomes another’s planning burden when geography compresses strategic warning and decision time.

Chinese Sustainment Links Extend Strategic Influence into the Bay of Bengal
China already supplies a large share of Bangladesh’s military equipment, including combat aircraft, armour, warships and submarines, making the J-10CE a considerably deeper technological extension of an established defence-industrial relationship.
Advanced fighters create enduring operational dependencies through engine support, radar modules, electronic-warfare libraries, mission software, specialist training, munitions, technical documentation and continuous access to original-equipment manufacturer engineering assistance.
Such dependence does not automatically eliminate Bangladeshi strategic autonomy, but it gives supplier reliability, export controls and bilateral political relations direct influence over fleet readiness rates during crises or prolonged operational mobilisation.
Pilot and ground-crew training in China could accelerate operational conversion while exposing Bangladesh to Chinese doctrine, maintenance practices and combat-system concepts, gradually aligning important institutional procedures even without formal alliance commitments.
Shared J-10CE operation with Pakistan could eventually enable limited exchanges in training, maintenance knowledge and tactical lessons, although interoperability would require political decisions, compatible security rules and protected communications arrangements.
For Beijing, a Bangladeshi order would establish the J-10CE beyond Pakistan, challenge Western and Russian offerings in cost-sensitive international markets and advertise a comprehensive export ecosystem combining sensors, missiles, aircraft and financing.
It would also expand Chinese strategic presence around the Bay of Bengal, where commercial infrastructure, maritime access and defence relationships increasingly intersect with India’s concern over influence along its periphery.
Bangladesh has framed post-2024 defence choices as more independent, and Rahman said J-10 discussions reflected new decision-making freedom, although greater political choice can coexist with increased technological dependence.
Dhaka’s optimal leverage would come from negotiating transparent lifecycle costs, guaranteed wartime spares, sovereign training capacity, local depot-level maintenance, software access and enforceable delivery protections before converting supplier competition into contractual commitment.
Until government approvals, committed funding and final contractual terms are confirmed, the draft remains strategic signalling rather than acquired combat power, but its trajectory already shows how Chinese airpower exports are reshaping South Asia.
