(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — The Abrams tanks supplied by the United States have been in Ukraine for the past two months to assist Kiev’s counterattacks against Russian military positions.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky had to make a surprising admission that the presence of 31 Abrams tanks in Ukraine did not bring about any significant changes on the battlefield.

In other words, Russia still dominates the battlefield, despite facing various Western weapon systems such as the Abrams tanks supplied by the United States.

In a meeting with African media representatives, President Zelensky reportedly made revelations on his Facebook about the recent performance of Abrams tanks on the Ukrainian battlefield.

Zelensky acknowledged that Ukraine possesses various modern tanks from Western countries, including Leopard, Challenger, and now Abrams, in addition to hundreds of tanks originally made by the Soviet Union, such as the T-72.

“The Abrams tank is of high quality, but we don’t have many of them. We want to improve relations with the United States and receive more of these tanks.

However, at the moment, it is difficult to assess whether the Abrams tanks have played a significant role in the main battlefield due to their very small number,” he said.

In September, the first group of 31 Abrams tanks was confirmed to have arrived in Ukraine, fulfilling the United States’ promise to send these tanks to aid Ukraine’s counterattacks against Russian military positions.

However, upon reaching Ukrainian soil, Ukrainian military officials issued a warning that the 70-ton Abrams tanks from the United States might not “last long” in the battlefield.

Furthermore, the Abrams tanks supplied to Ukraine are the M1A1 variant, considered to be “aged” and not equipped with “depleted uranium” armor and limited capabilities compared to the latest variant, M1A2.

The confirmation of the recent arrival of Abrams tanks in Ukraine was well-received by Russian military members, who expressed excitement about “hunting down” the American-made tanks.

Russian military members, interviewed by the state defense media, expressed their eagerness to embark on a mission to “hunt” Abrams tanks, similar to what they did with Leopard and Challenger tanks made by Germany and Britain.

Captain Sambu Khutakov, a commander of a Russian tank battalion, stated that information about the presence of 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks in Ukraine had sparked excitement among Russian military members.

Sambu is one of Russia’s war heroes and has been awarded several military bravery medals.

“The crews of Russian tanks stationed in Rabotino are preparing themselves to begin the mission of hunting down the Abrams tanks made by the United States,” said Khutakov. — DSA
