(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — Malaysia and Turkey are strategic partners in Southeast Asia, according to the Anadolu Agency (AA), quoting Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler on Friday.

“Our relationship is based on historical and cultural ties, as well as principles of love, respect, and cooperation,” Guler said during his speech at the 66th Independence Day celebration of Malaysia in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Guler also noted that Malaysia has developed and strengthened itself in various fields in recent years.

“In Turkey, we are very pleased with the progress of our Malaysian brothers, with whom we share deep-rooted historical and cultural connections.”

Diplomatic relations between Turkey and Malaysia have existed since 1964.

“Anka” by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI)

“As members of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the D-8, Turkey and Malaysia share similar perspectives on various regional and global issues,” according to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a recent video conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last month, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his desire for both, Turkey  and Malaysia to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense as soon as possible.

A statement by the Presidential Communication Directorate stated that concluding the MoU is aimed at meeting Malaysia’s defense needs as quickly as possible.

Erdogan is also said to be planning a visit to Malaysia at the invitation of the Prime Minister.

In recent years, Malaysia has been among the major users of various defense systems developed by Turkish defense companies.

“KARAOK” anti-tank guided missile

Turkish defense companies such as FNSS have supplied hundreds of “Gempita” and “Adnan” armored vehicles for the use of the Malaysian Army.

Currently, Turkish defense companies remain active in the Malaysian market, offering a variety of defense systems for the Malaysian Armed Forces and other security forces.

Recently, the Turkish defense company ROKETSAN was reported to have successfully supplied 18 units of the “KARAOK” anti-tank guided missile system, while Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) supplied three ANKA-S Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

Furthermore, TAI has also offered Malaysia other systems it has developed, including the ATAK attack helicopter, and as a development partner for Turkey’s fifth-generation aircraft program, KAAN, which is set to make its maiden flight later this year.

Meanwhile, the construction program for eight Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) Batch II for the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) and self-propelled howitzers for the Malaysian Army has attracted the interest of several Turkish companies to participate in the competition. — DSA
