(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — A few days ago, Russia announced that it had initiated large-scale construction of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) called “Sarmat.”
The ICBM “Sarmat” missiles are being constructed at the Makeyev State Rocket Center under the central agency, Roscosmos.
According to Russia’s defense industry, efforts are currently underway to prepare the first ICBM “Sarmat” missiles for active duty as quickly as possible.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the construction, installation, and commissioning of the ICBM launch silos at their launch site are in their final stages.
Recently, Russia’s Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu visited Kramash JSC, the company developing “Sarmat.”
According to him, the most important task at hand is to modernize Russia’s Strategic Rocket Forces by deploying “Sarmat” for active duty as soon as possible, as directed by President Vladimir Putin.
He stated that “Sarmat” is a crucial foundation for Russia’s ability to defend against all forms of threats.
Referred to as “Satan” by NATO, the RS-28 “Sarmat” ICBM is capable of carrying between 10 and 10 nuclear warheads, known as Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles (MIRV).
With 10 MIRV warheads, the nuclear-guided missile “Sarmat” or “Satan” has the capability to target 10 different enemy locations.
Russian media reports that the MIRV warheads of “Sarmat” can target any location in the world, whether in the South Pole or the North Pole, demonstrating the “daunting” reach of Russia’s latest ICBM.
In April of last year, just two months after their military incursion and conflict with Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin stated that the ICBM “Sarmat” would make Russia’s enemies “think twice.”
Putin’s statement followed shortly after the successful first launch test of “Sarmat” at the Plesetsk launch site in the northern part of the country, hitting a target located 6,000 km away on the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia.
“I congratulate all of you on the successful launch of the Sarmat ICBM. This unique weapon will strengthen the combat potential of our armed forces and ensure Russia’s security from external threats, making those who frequently engage in aggressive rhetoric against us think twice,” said Putin.
According to President Putin, the ICBM “Sarmat” possesses high tactical and technical characteristics and can overcome all modern air defense systems.
The head of Roscosmos also stated that the launch test of “Sarmat” at the Plesetsk launch site was a “gift” to the West.
The thermonuclear-guided missile “Sarmat,” which stands at 35 meters tall and weighs 200 tons, can penetrate any air defense system and target any location in the world at a range of between 18,000 to 20,000 km.
The Russian Ministry of Defense also stated that the “Sarmat” ballistic missile is the most dangerous guided missile in the world with the longest firing range, further enhancing the firepower of the country’s guided missile forces. — DSA
