(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — In recent years, Russia has significantly bolstered its underwater assets, with its Navy recently receiving another two new nuclear-powered submarines.
According to sources cited by the Russian news agency Sputnik, the Russian Navy has recently received the “Alexander III,” a nuclear submarine also known as the Project 955A or Borei-A class.
Additionally, the Russian Navy has also welcomed another Yasen/Yasen-M class submarine named “Krasnoyarsk,” marking it as the fourth Yasen-class submarine in service with the country’s navy.
Yasen-class nuclear submarines are equipped with cruise missiles and hypersonic missiles, while Borei-class submarines are nuclear ballistic missile submarines.
The sources informed the news agency that both nuclear-powered submarines, Alexander III and Krasnoyarsk, have completed the acceptance and handover documentation at the Sevmash shipyard.
The flag-raising ceremony for both submarines, armed with nuclear missiles, is scheduled after December 10.
The sources further informed Sputnik that technically, the submarines have been handed over to the end-users, the Russian Navy.
The source also informed Sputnik that the ships were officially considered to have joined the Russian Navy after the St. Andrew’s flag was raised on the naval combat vessels.
A few days ago, the fifth Yasen-M class submarine, named “Arkhangelsk,” was also launched at the Sevmash shipyard, adding to the three Yasen-class submarines already in service with the Russian Navy.
The three Yasen-class nuclear submarines currently in service with the Russian Navy are Severodvinsk (code 885), Kazan (code 885M), and Novosibirsk (code 885M), all equipped with Oniks and Kalibr cruise missiles.
In addition to these guided missiles, Yasen-class nuclear submarines are also expected to be armed with hypersonic Tsirkon missiles.
Senior officials from the United States Department of Defense have characterized Yasen-class nuclear submarines as the “most powerful” submarines in the possession of the Russian Navy.
Also known as the Severodvinsk class by NATO, these 13,800-ton submarines are recognized by international defense analysts as among the most capable submarines globally, carrying dozens of cruise and hypersonic guided missiles with nuclear warheads.
Apart from guided missiles, Yasen-class submarines are also equipped with torpedoes.
In a documentary program “60 Minutes”, an unnamed official from the United States Department of Defense claimed that a newly launched Yasen-class submarine had submerged in the Atlantic Ocean, and efforts to track it for several weeks proved unsuccessful.
For the Borei-class nuclear submarines, weighing up to 24,000 tons, they are equipped with 16 Bulava nuclear ballistic missiles.
Recently, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the successful launch of a Bulava nuclear ballistic missile by one of its latest Borei-class nuclear-powered submarines, the “Imperator Aleksandr III” (K-554).
The Bulava ballistic missile, measuring 12 meters in height and carrying a nuclear warhead, launched by the newest Borei-class submarine, has a range of 8,000 km.
Each Bulava ballistic missile is equipped with between four and ten nuclear warheads. — DSA
