Russian Nuclear Subs Surge in ‘Appearances’ Along US Coastal Waters

As reported by US media recently, the increased frequency of Russian nuclear-powered submarine appearances on the US coast, as stated by senior US military officials, is indeed a threat to the security of the country.

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – Senior officials of the United States Navy have expressed their “concern” about the increasing frequency of the “emergence” of Russian nuclear-powered submarines in the coastal waters of the country in recent times.

As reported by US media recently, the increased frequency of Russian nuclear-powered submarine appearances on the US coast, as stated by senior US military officials, is indeed a threat to the security of the country.

According to US military officials, this increased frequency of “emergence” of Russian nuclear-powered submarines on the country’s coast is occurring even as Moscow is facing conflict with Ukraine.

Michael Peterson, the Director of the Russia Maritime Studies Institute (RMSI), who is an expert on Russia’s maritime capabilities, said there are many signs that Russia has increased the deployment of its nuclear-powered submarines to coastal waters of the United States.

The deployment of both conventional and nuclear-powered submarines is not only targeted at coastal areas of the United States but also in the Mediterranean and around Europe.

What Moscow is doing at the moment, according to the researcher, is similar to what the Soviet Union did during the Cold War era.

Russia’s strategy becomes even clearer when Russian President Vladimir Putin and top military leaders review some of their naval assets, including their latest nuclear-powered submarine, the Generalissimus Suvorov, capable of launching nuclear-guided missiles.

According to the Russian President, the country will build more nuclear-powered submarines to “ensure the security of the nation for decades to come.”

Since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia has tirelessly sought to strengthen its fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.

In recent years, Moscow has developed several types of nuclear-powered submarines capable of diving into strategic locations in the United States and Europe.

With an estimated ownership of 58 nuclear-powered submarines spanning several classes, Russia’s nuclear-powered naval assets can be deployed anywhere in the world, including the coastal waters of America.

Russia’s military action to deploy submarines in American coastal waters is seen as a challenge to US Navy commanders and somewhat undermines Washington’s military influence.

Last October, the director of the US Northern Command and NORAD, General Glen VanHerck, issued a warning about the increased presence of Russian nuclear-powered submarines like the “Severodvinsk” in the coastal waters of the United States.

Senior US military officials have stated that Russia is the greatest threat to the country’s military.

“They have just moved their submarines (Severodvinsk class) to the Pacific.”

Commander of the US Navy’s Office of Intelligence, Admiral Michael Studeman, reportedly said that the Severodvinsk-class or Yasen-class submarines are extremely dangerous.

“These submarines (Severodvinsk class) are very modern and have diverse capabilities. They are very active,” Studeman said, adding that Russian submarines have begun patrolling European waters, thus jeopardizing US interests.

Russian submarines are also present in the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic.

Studeman said that tracking and monitoring these Russian submarines represent a “two-pronged threat” to the United States and its allies. – DSA
