Admiral Nakhimov: Ready for Sea Trials After 24 Years of Repairs

The Russian Navy describes the nuclear-powered surface warship "Admiral Nakhimov," with a full load displacement of 28,000 tons, as its most capable surface ship.

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) –Russia declares its “most powerful” warship, the nuclear-powered Kirov-class cruiser “Admiral Nakhimov” (Project 11442M), is ready for sea trials later this year after extensive repairs and upgrades that began in 1999 were completed at the Sevmash Shipyard.

The Russian Navy describes the nuclear-powered surface warship “Admiral Nakhimov,” with a full load displacement of 28,000 tons, as its most capable surface ship.

The “Admiral Nakhimov” and another Kirov-class cruiser, “Pyotr Velikiy,” are the two nuclear-powered surface warships in the Russian Navy.

“Sevmash Shipyard has started the training process for the children of the cruiser Admiral Nakhimov. The ship will be taken to sea for trials, with the crew testing the ship in all operating conditions,” the shipyard recently stated.

The warship “Admiral Nakhimov” began its repair and upgrade work at the Sevmash Shipyard in 1999, nearly 24 years ago.

Among the repairs and upgrades carried out on the nuclear-powered warship were replacing the uranium in its nuclear reactor and equipping it with several new weapon systems, including cruise missiles.

It will be equipped with 176 Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells to launch land and air-targeted guided missiles.

Among the new weapon systems that the “Admiral Nakhimov” will carry is the hypersonic guided missile “Tsirkon,” with Russian military observers stating that Russia’s “most powerful” warship will be equipped with 60 hypersonic guided missiles.

With a speed exceeding Mach 8, the hypersonic guided missile can be equipped with a nuclear warhead capable of hitting targets up to 1,000km away.

In addition to Tsirkon, the warship will also be equipped with “Kalibr” cruise missiles, the Fort-M air defense system, Pantsir-M, as well as anti-submarine systems “Paket-NK” and “Otvet.”

The Kirov-class cruiser “Admiral Nakhimov” was commissioned into the Soviet Navy in 1988 after its construction began in 1983 during the Communist era.

The ship was originally named “Kalinin” until 1992 when it was renamed “Admiral Nakhimov.”
