(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — In a recent official visit, Malaysia’s Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Mohammad Ab Rahman visited the Defence Special Operations Division (DOSD) and received a comprehensive briefing on the latest developments concerning the involved forces.
DOSD, a combined special forces unit within the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), is stationed at Kem Perdana, Sungai Besi.
According to an official statement released through Malaysia’s Armed Forces social media channels, the arrival of the Armed Forces Chief was welcomed by Assistant Chief of Staff for Defence Operations and Training, Major General Dato’ Noorrul Azril Ariffin, and DOSD Director Colonel Mohd Zairul Hisham Muhammad Ibrahim.
Before commencing the visit, the Armed Forces Chief was provided with a briefing on the recent progress of the force, particularly in terms of readiness.
Simultaneously, efforts to enhance capabilities in alignment with current threats were examined, as stated in the official release.
Following the briefing, the Armed Forces Chief was taken to the DOSD Practical Target Field for a session on DOSD Preparedness Demonstration, Speed Shooting, and Tactical Fitness Agility Shooting.
DOSD is a specialized combined force from all three services capable of rapid deployment to counteract acts of terrorism and any crisis threatening national security.
Its strength encompasses staff, combat teams, and combat support teams functioning as the First Responder Group (FRG).
DOSD commenced full operations on October 21, 2020, and its membership consists of combined special forces from Malaysia Armed Forces, namely the 21 Gerup Gerak Khas (21 GGK), Pasukan Khas Laut (PASKAL), and Pasukan Khas Udara (PASKAU).
Last October, it was reported that the Economic Planning Unit approved RM21.8 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK12) specifically for equipment acquisition for DOSD.
The acquisition covers specialized equipment worth RM10 million, communication equipment (RM7 million), special operations vehicles (RM2.8 million), and weaponry (RM1.9 million).
The concept of DOSD closely resembles that of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or SOCOM), overseeing and administering different special forces branches within the United States Armed Forces, including the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Air Force. – DSA
