(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — For the first time in 29 days of armed conflict with the Israeli military along the Lebanon border, Hezbollah fighters have launched two “Burkan” rockets which carry large warhead designed to inflict maximum damage on its “enemy.”

The short-range “Burkan” rockets are feared because they are equipped with explosive weighing between 400kg to 500kg and can cause significant destruction.

In a statement, Hezbollah said its fighters had targeted six Israeli military control positions along the Israel-Lebanon border using “rockets and appropriate weapons”, without mentioning “Burkan.”

They stated that the bombs and weapons launched had successfully hit their targets.

The Al-Mayadeen television station, based in Beirut, reported that Hezbollah fighters launched two “Burkan” rockets (which means volcano in Arabic) towards an Israeli security post known as Jal-al Allam.

Besides Jal-al Allam, Hezbollah fighters also launched attacks on Israeli military control posts in al-Jardah, Hadb Al-Bustan, Malkia, and “Metula.”

Lebanese security sources have confirmed that Hezbollah fighters launched the “Burkan” rocket for the first time in this conflict today.

Israeli media has also acknowledged Hezbollah’s first use of the “Burkan” rocket against Jewish military positions today.

Previously, there were reports of Hezbollah fighters and the Syrian government forces using “Burkan” rockets to destroy their enemy strongholds in Syria.

The “Burkan” rocket launched by Hezbollah today is one of the rockets and weapons possessed by the Lebanese armed group.

Moments before “Burkan” rocket laucnched by Hezbollah fighters struck Israeli military position at Israel-Lebanese border today.

Capable of hitting targets up to 5km away, the “Burkan” rocket was developed during the conflict in Syria and was designed for close-range warfare.

The crudely design rocket is suitable for striking densely populated areas.

Hezbollah is believed to use the “Burkan” rocket for two purposes: bombing civilian areas and Israeli military bases near the Israel-Lebanon border.

Another purpose is to strike maneuvering Israeli military located in the densely populated areas within Lebanese border.

Meanwhile, Al-Manar TV, closely associated with Hezbollah, reported that the group’s fighters had shot down an Israeli military reconnaissance balloon flying over the town of Misgaf Am.

Lebanese news agencies also reported that Israel had launched several air strikes on villages along the Israel-Lebanon border, such as Labbounieh and Hibrieh. — DSA
