Ukraine Has No Response to Russian AWACS A-50, S-400 Partnership

International defense analysts state that the recent significant success of Russia's air defense system in Ukraine is partly due to the integration of operations between the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) A-50 aircraft and the air defense system, particularly the S-400 "Triumf."

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — A new Russian air warfare tactical has been identified as one of the reasons behind its recent success in shooting down a significant number of Ukrainian Air Force fighter planes.

When meeting with members of the Russian Vostok Group of Force recently, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu stated that as many as 24 Ukrainian aircraft, helicopters, and drones were successfully shot down in a span of five days.

International defense analysts suggest that the significant success of the Russian air defense system is attributed in part to the integration of operations between the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) A-50 aircraft and the air defense system, primarily the S-400 “Triumf.”

“The S-400 air defense system has been launched against targets at maximum range using information and data transmitted by the AWACS A-50 aircraft. This provides the air defense system with the capability to operate at maximum levels of altitude and range,” said the analyst.

Meanwhile, Russia’s state-owned TASS news agency mentioned that the S-400 air defense system had been intergrated with the AWACS A-50 aircraft in special military operations in Ukraine at this time.

“During special military operations, the Russian military has utilized the S-400 air defense system in conjunction with the AWACS A-50 aircraft equipped with long-range radar, ensuring the success of the S-400 air defense system in its mission,” the news agency stated.

Another defense analyst noted that all data and information from the AWACS A-50 aircraft is directly relayed to the S-400 air defense system, ensuring that targets, whether aircraft or helicopters, remain unaware that they are being tracked and engaged.

The S-400 air defense system utilizes advanced surveillance and tracking radar that emits powerful frequencies while activating Radar Warning Receivers (RWR) installed on aircraft.

The use of the high-powered radar of the S-400 system can expose its position to the enemy, making it vulnerable to attacks by Ukrainian fighter planes.

With the application of Russia’s new air warfare tactical system, enemy aircraft tracking is now handled by the long-range radar of the AWACS A-50 aircraft, with all information and data being transmitted to the S-400 system.

The S-400 air defense system also employs its radar in “war reserve mode” or “training frequency,” concealing its critical data, preventing the enemy from analyzing the radar’s frequency characteristics.

Defense analysts suggest that the S-400 air defense system may be equipped with missile like the 40N6E, which can engage targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers.

Recently, the Russian military’s air defense system has reportedly successfully shot down seven Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter planes within a 24-hour period.

If the statement made by the Russian Ministry of Defense is confirmed, it would be “very bad news” for the Ukrainian military, given the country’s limited number of fighter aircraft.

“In just 24 hours, a total of seven Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter planes were shot down by the Russian air defense system,” according to a statement by the Russian Ministry of Defense, as quoted by the state news agency RIA Novosti.

The Russian Ministry of Defense did not provide further details about the claim, but defense observers suggest that the Ukrainian MiG-29 aircraft likely fell victim to “stealth attacks” by the Russian air defense system. — DSA
