Malaysia’s Coast Guard Acquires Four Leonardo AW189 Medium-Lift Helicopters

The contract for the acquisition of four AW189 helicopters developed by Leonardo Helicopters has been awarded to Galaxy Aerospace (M) Sdn Bhd.

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has acquire four medium-sized AW189 helicopters developed by Leonardo Helicopters.

The Letter of Acceptance for the procurement of these four AW189 helicopters by MMEA was handed out by the Secretary-General of the Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Datuk Ruji Ubi.

The contract for this procurement has been awarded to Galaxy Aerospace (M) Sdn Bhd.

At present, two AW189 helicopters are also in use by the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

The AW189 Leonardo is equipped with various features to carry out challenging missions.

Weighing between 8,300kg and 8,600kg and powered by two engines manufactured by Safran or General Electric, these medium-lift helicopters are capable of flying at speeds up to 294 km/h.

With a crew of two, the AW189 can accommodate up to 19 passengers.

The AW189 helicopters are equipped with capabilities to perform demanding medical and rescue missions.

The AW189’s cabin is the largest in its class, capable of accommodating nine passengers along with three stretchers and essential equipment for life-saving missions.

Developed by Leonardo Helicopters, these helicopters feature cutting-edge digital technology, incorporating avionics systems developed by their own expertise.
