Telegram Channel Sells Technological Documents for KF-21 “Boramae”, KUH-1 “Surion” Helicopter

Reports from February 2024 indicate that the Telegram channel claimed to have collaborators within the South Korean military and the Agency for Defense Development (ADD).

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) — South Korean authorities have initiated a joint investigation into a Telegram channel accused of “selling technological documents” related to the KF-21 “Boramae” fighter aircraft and the KUH-1 Surion helicopter.

According to The Korea Times, the probe involves several national agencies including the military, police, and national intelligence.

Both assets were developed by the nation’s aerospace giant, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), established in 1999.

Reports from February 2024 indicate that the Telegram channel claimed to have collaborators within the South Korean military and the Agency for Defense Development (ADD).

The channel also stated it was selling documents related to the KUH-1 Surion, the country’s first domestically developed helicopter.

Additionally, the channel published several images showcasing components of the helicopter.

It further claimed to have obtained technological documents concerning the 4.5 generation fighter aircraft, KF-21 Boramae, currently under development by KAI.

The Telegram channel announced its readiness to sell these documents following verification processes and claimed possession of documents related to the joint military training exercises, Freedom Shield, between South Korea and the United States.

Launched in 2015, the KF-21 “Boramae” development program is estimated to cost US$6.59 billion.

South Korea is expected to begin mass production of the KF-21 this year, with plans to manufacture 40 aircraft for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF).

KAI aims to supply 40 KF-21 Block 1 aircraft designed for air-to-air missions by 2026, followed by 80 KF-21 Block 2 aircraft for air-to-ground missions in subsequent phases.

KAI is reportedly investing US$178 million to commence the construction of these aircraft.

KAI also intends to start exporting the KF-21 “Borame” fighter jets to interested clients after fulfilling the needs of the ROKAF.

The KUH-1 Surion, a multi-purpose utility helicopter developed by KAI, is currently in use by the South Korean military.

It is equipped with modern features surpassing other utility helicopters in the market, such as operation capabilities in all weather conditions and both day and night.

The helicopter integrates advanced developments such as a digital glass cockpit, Automatic Flight Control Systems, 3D digital maps, mission planning and analysis, and a Health and Usage Monitoring System.

Additionally, it features the latest Night Vision Goggle technology and flight controls.

To date, KAI has produced 300 KUH-1 Surion utility helicopters for the South Korean military and civil use.

These dual-engine helicopters can carry up to 13 passengers including two pilots and have a Maximum Take-off Gross Weight of 8.7 tonnes, with a speed capability of 146 knots. — DSA
