(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – The Malaysian Army recently took delivery of 110 units of the 84mm Carl Gustav M4 recoilless rifles, believed to be intended for use by personnel from the 10th Parachute Brigade and the Special Forces Group (GGK).
In a recent announcement on the Malaysian Army’s official Facebook page and through its news portal, it was confirmed that the Army had received the multi-purpose weapon.
Photographs accompanying the announcement showed the handover ceremony of the Carl Gustav M4, along with other military assets, to the Chief of Army, General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan.
The event took place at the 92 Central Vehicle Depot (92 DKP) in Batu Kentonmen Camp two days ago, attended by Deputy Chief of Army Lt Gen Dato’ Tengku Muhammad Fauzi Tengku Ibrahim and Army Chief of Staff Lt Gen Dato’ Zaidan Atan.
The Malaysian Army is already familiar with the earlier variant, the Carl Gustav M2, and the newly received M4 version represents the latest upgrade.

Developed by Swedish defense and security company Saab, the Carl Gustav M4 is designed to meet various combat needs, providing versatility across multiple operational scenarios.
The M4’s multi-role capabilities make it suitable for anti-insurgency missions, peacekeeping operations, and urban or complex combat environments.
It can effectively neutralize armored vehicles, even those equipped with additional add-on armor, as well as fortified positions and enemy structures.
First unveiled at a U.S. defense exhibition in 2014, the M4 is also known as the M3A1 Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System (MAAWS).
Slovakia became the first country to operationalize the Carl Gustav M4, receiving the system in July 2017.
Today, the weapon is used by 40 countries worldwide.
The M4 features a compact design, measuring under 1,000mm in length and weighing less than 7kg, enabling a two-person crew – a gunner and a loader – to operate it efficiently.
It can fire a variety of munitions, including anti-armor, anti-structure, multi-role, anti-personnel, and illumination rounds, with precision against both moving and stationary targets at a range of up to 2,000 meters.
During the ceremony, the Malaysian Army also received other equipment, including 57 Modular Tents, 13 Multi-Channel Radio Systems (MCRS), 10 Multipurpose Mobile Inventory Vehicles (MMIV), 50 units of 1-Ton Trucks Fitted for Radio (FFR), two towing vehicles with horse floats, and 30 All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV).
Additionally, the Army took delivery of 102 V/UHF handheld, vehicular, and H/VHF manpack radios, 18 Night Vision Goggles (NVG), and 460 complete sets of walkie-talkies for communications.
Suppliers also provided 124 Tactical Parachute Free Fall Gliders and a Close Quarter Battle (CQB) Simulator System for training purposes. – DSA
