(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – China has reportedly developed a radar system capable of detecting and tracking the United States’ stealth fighter, the F-22 “Raptor.”
According to the *South China Morning Post* (SCMP), the researchers behind the radar’s development incorporated technology from the BeiDou navigation satellite system (BDS) to enhance its ability to track stealth aircraft.
The research team claims the radar is cost-effective, as it operates using only basic receiver antennas.
“The radar (allegedly capable of detecting the F-22) can be deployed anywhere in the world and remains undetectable, as it emits no signals that could reveal its location,” they stated.
To ensure uninterrupted operation, the Chinese-made radar offers the option to switch frequencies to the Global Positioning System (GPS), Russia’s GLONASS, or Europe’s Galileo systems.
These frequencies serve as backups in case of disruptions to BeiDou signals.
BDS was developed independently by China to address its security, economic, and social needs.
It provides global services around the clock, regardless of weather conditions.
According to the SCMP report, the Chinese research team published their findings in the *National University of Defence Technology* journal, including images of the F-22 “Raptor.”
Their study also claims the radar technology can detect the F-35, another stealth fighter used by the U.S. military.
If the team’s claims prove accurate, this low-cost radar could enable various countries to detect and track Western stealth aircraft.
The researchers also propose making these anti-stealth radars widely available to nations worldwide, potentially altering the global balance of power in dealing with stealth fighters like the F-22 and F-35.
Last year, the state-owned China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) also claimed success in developing an “anti-stealth” radar, named the “YLC-8E.”
The YLC-8E radar leverages electromagnetic technology to detect aircraft and drones, even when they operate in stealth mode.
CETC describes the YLC-8E as a fourth-generation intelligence radar, boasting a detection rate of up to 95 percent for stealth aircraft.
The company claims the radar can identify aircraft or combat drones—stealth or otherwise—at a range of 500 kilometers, and missiles up to 700 kilometers away.
Chinese military analysts assert that the YLC-8E is the world’s first anti-stealth radar using Ultra High Frequency (UHF) technology.
